Views like this frustrates me.

It makes people hold up countries as an ideal as response and ends up feeling like it's dismissing the real concerns minorities in those countries are facing, because hey, at least you guys have it better than elsewhere!!

Ah, but there's federal marijuana legalization, don't you know?

See, I don’t know about other countries vs Canada, but in a US vs Canada fight Canada certainly wins the “more progressive” award for generally treating refugees better and having a much saner and kinder healthcare system. The reason they don’t lose points compared to the US on their treatment of their indigenous population is that the US treats theirs just as poorly, if not worse.

Canada is more progressive than the United States but that does not make it a progressive wonderland where regressive policies never can dwell.

AYRT—of course, but if Canada metaphorically has to deal with the occasional smell of shit from a busted sewer pipe compared to the US where the shit and sewage flows down an open trench in the middle of the street, people from the US (raises hand) can still be impressed because omg, you don’t have to see turds floating down the road and sometimes you can’t even smell shit? Paradise!

Yes, this is the problem. It unintentionally downplays the issues different populations are dealing with because at least it's not as bad as x country.

It's a matter of just because your problems are less severe than someone else's doesn't mean you get to pretend your problems don't exist. There are countries the US could win the fight against but the turds would still be there.

The secret was pretty specific about how laughable it is that Canada wouldn't follow the US and I think people pointing out the specific instances where Canada didn't, is a pretty good argument to make. Whether the country is ideal or not is not at all the point.

Right? As a Canadian, our country is not even close to perfect, but pointing out x, y, and z where we do the opposite things isn't a non-sensical 'rainbow' response to the secret.
