Rec for where a first time solo female traveler should visit.

I prefer museums/history over nature.

Within a specific country or generally internationally?

None in particular. I am interested in both Europe and Asia.

A large city, then. Personally, I think Paris and/or London are hard to beat. Both have fairly convenient public transportation systems (certainly by American standards), both are accustomed to tourists, and both have great museums and historical sites that are mostly concentrated in a central location. If English is your native language, then try London.

London has some great museums and historical sites. Washington, DC has the Smithsonian (which is actually quite a few museums) and a lot of monuments. Many major US cities have science museums and natural history museums (my favorites). Wherever you go, you should make sure you know a least a little of one of their official languages (or major ones, since some don't have an official one) and at least some of the etiquette rules. If you're not going to drive, make sure there is a good transportation system.

Thanks! London might work. I have been to DC and loved it.

Since you said you are interested in Asia: Japan is very safe and if you stay in the known tourist spots, the language barrier wouldn't be that much of a problem.

I'd stay clear of India and China as a solo female traveler for now.
