That phrase is really on-point. The world would be happier place if people didn't do that. I hope your partner's dealt with that.

Me, I didn't have kids, this being one reason. I too am going to die alone. But then, don't most people, ultimately?

He has, thanks. He came to terms with it pretty early on in his early teens (the height of when his mother and only parent ditched him constantly) and it made him unhappy and gave him some abandonment issues. But at least he was spared the pain of not being able to see his mother for who she was. So many people can't let go of the wishful thinking of who they WANT their parent to be and keep getting burned over and over again. He knew she wasn't ever going to be there for him other than the bare bones stuff.
