My partner's mother, who was one of those women who had a baby because they wanted someone to love them unconditionally and be their therapy animal. Whenever she got a new boyfriend (usually some loser POS), she'd basically forget all about him, and then they'd leave her and then she'd remember she had a precious child she loves sooooooooo much.

She's in her 60s now, still a selfish sack of shit who LOVES her kid SO MUCH but still can't spare a single thought for anyone but herself. She's going to die mostly alone, which is what she deserves.

be their therapy animal

That phrase is really on-point. The world would be happier place if people didn't do that. I hope your partner's dealt with that.

Me, I didn't have kids, this being one reason. I too am going to die alone. But then, don't most people, ultimately?

He has, thanks. He came to terms with it pretty early on in his early teens (the height of when his mother and only parent ditched him constantly) and it made him unhappy and gave him some abandonment issues. But at least he was spared the pain of not being able to see his mother for who she was. So many people can't let go of the wishful thinking of who they WANT their parent to be and keep getting burned over and over again. He knew she wasn't ever going to be there for him other than the bare bones stuff.
