Not chosen for a dance troupe by dance teacher in elementary school. This dance troupe ended up dancing on stage at the Academy Awards. I thought it was suspicious when the teacher picked a girl I'll call "Shart" and then ended up picking many of "Shart"'s friends to join her. Decades later I found out the dance teacher only picked "Shart" and friends because her father did some legal favors for them. I can't live down the memory of my mother telling me at age ten how the teacher KNOWS who makes a good dancer and that I look too gangly, that the other girls must be better than me because the teacher's an expert! D:

Oof. That must have felt like a slap to the face.

And people who "buy" their way or their kids' way into a special opportunity suck hippo balls, and so do the feeble-minded twits who accept favors and allow this. They're all part of what's wrong with the world.

I think it was more of: the dance teacher's institute was poor and the teacher asked for favors. He received free legal help from "Shart"'s father and decided to return the favor by picking Shart for the dance troupe. None of us kids knew that troupe would go to the Academy Awards!

It's a possibility, but that doesn't mean the dad didn't know what he was doing. And it doesn't matter whether they anticipated it would go to the Academys or not. Other kids were denied troupe membership because of this "arrangement" and that was a rotten decision on the teacher's part.

To be fair: the group that went to the Academy Awards was a "special", separate group than the kids (like myself) that signed up to participate in the dance activity 1x weekly. You had to audition to be in both groups.

I wasn't able to find her. Guess she didn't get any camera time during the dance but I believe she's at the end of the show with all the kids piling near Johnny Carson.

I can see being mad at the teacher for capitulating to money over actually choosing who was best suited to dance, but I don't understand being mad at your mom? She assumes that a dance teacher knows who is most talented and chose accordingly, that's not an unrealistic expectation. Your (as a parent) kid isn't always the best at everything, even if some parents like to think they are...

Not OP, but it can suck when it feels like your own parent doesn't even have your back, even if your parent doesn't outright insult your looks and your talent level.

It wasn't a professional dance troupe; I am not a trained dancer. It was a dance activity given to a bunch of public schools by a dance organization that relied on sponsors. Some kids via the organization WERE trained dancers. The majority of us via public schools were not. "Shart" and myself were the latter.
As for the teacher knowing which one of the kids in my class are the best dancers to be chosen for the special team- well, it looked mighty suspicious when Shart and a bunch of her friends were picked! They weren't all great dancers!
