Petty things you're bitter about

(Anonymous) 2019-06-29 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
A lighter version of the "can't forgive" thread: What are some things that aren't big deals in the grand scheme of things, but you just can't get past for whatever reason?

For me, it was a particular writing class in college. I'd seen it in course listings my very first semester and could not wait to take it.

Only the class was a mess. The teacher only wanted certain types of stories, and everyone who didn't write what he wanted was bummed. He praised work that was terrible, because it was what he wanted, while bashing mine because it wasn't. I learned that this was a common complaint in that class.

Interestingly, my advisor really tried to tell me that I didn't need the course. I now wonder if he knew what I was about to get myself into...

Hah. I wrote a story about a deer when I was in primary school. I used the word "tine". My teacher gave it the red pen and said that no such word existed.

It's been 15-20 years since then but I'm still pissed about some things teachers in primary school and high school marked as errors that were not actually wrong.

I'm pissed that I got a C on a paper for using the Oxford comma and one rather than two spaces after a period. Every other teacher wanted it the way I did it. This one teacher wanted it the other way. I accidentally forgot on one paper. He took off points for each "error." My A paper turned into a C. Still pissed about it.

I nearly failed a religion course because I refused to capitalize god.

I decided not to give recs on here anymore because the people who asked for them never even thought a simple thank you or any sort of acknowledgement was necessary whenever I gave them recs. I'm done wasting my time typing up well thought through rec lists when not even the people who asked for them seem to look at them.

Re: Petty things you're bitter about

(Anonymous) 2019-06-29 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I've gone through the trouble to give recs to named users who requested them - people who are active right here, right now - and not so much as a "k" of acknowledgment. And they keep asking too, LOL. Well, not going to waste my time anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-29 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I get where you're coming from, but that makes me a bit sad because I always take the effort to thank people (even if I don't end up liking any of the reqs) because of the effort that went into giving them. :/

Case of a few ruining it for the rest of us.

Re: Petty things you're bitter about

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'll still give recs sometimes, but I'm less likely to now, because I too have had several instances where I took the time to give the best recs I could for the person, and they never responded at all. Like, I don't need a paragraph of praise and gratefulness, but a simple thank you seems like the bare minimum. And yeah, it's even worse when it's a named user, because you know they saw your post.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate when I answer a fic search and don't get a response - like, if you're looking for a particular work that meets these descriptors, and I find a work that meets those descriptors, would you please tell me if that was in fact the thing you were looking for?

I wish it were easier to find past conversations I've had on FS - sometimes I remember a nice exchange I had, and I'd like to reread it, but there's not much hope of finding it again! *sadface*

Same same - I've saved a few "fun thread day" links, but it's impossible to track every one. Last week I thought of a secret someone made of one of my comments last year, and now it's killing me that I can't find it.

I agree 100%!

I've found a few from time to time but I end speding hours sorting through years of secrets and threads!

I got a question right while playing a history trivia game and I was told I got it wrong. That was years ago and I'm still pissed.

I was about ten. I heard a song at school, one of those dumb songs kids change the lyrics to like "Jingle bells, Batman smells" -- anyway I don't even remember what the song was but I thought it was hilarious, so I sang it to my neighborhood friend and she just looked deadpan and said it was lame.

About a year later, a new girl moved into the neighborhood and I hated her because she was a bossy brat, but everyone else thought she was so cool. One day my friend said "Hey, wanna hear this funny song (new girl's name) taught me?" And started singing the EXACT SAME song I taught her a year ago.

That's the pettiest thing I'm still bitter about. Especially petty since my friend and I have gotten closer as we got older, and we don't know the other girl at all anymore.

I wanted to go to Projekt Revolution when I was in high school and pleaded with my parents to take me. They kept saying no, but I thought if I raised the money for two tickets, they’d agree to take me. Well, I raised the money, but they still said no. Later on, my sister would get to see One Direction live three times, courtesy of my parents. When I bought tickets to MCR’s final tour, they tried to make me take my sister (who couldn’t stand MCR) and said they’d buy her a ticket. Needless to say, I was pretty bitter.

That's pretty shitty of them. Have your parents always shown such favoritism towards your sister?

Not chosen for a dance troupe by dance teacher in elementary school. This dance troupe ended up dancing on stage at the Academy Awards. I thought it was suspicious when the teacher picked a girl I'll call "Shart" and then ended up picking many of "Shart"'s friends to join her. Decades later I found out the dance teacher only picked "Shart" and friends because her father did some legal favors for them. I can't live down the memory of my mother telling me at age ten how the teacher KNOWS who makes a good dancer and that I look too gangly, that the other girls must be better than me because the teacher's an expert! Oof. That must have felt like a slap to the face.

And people who "buy" their way or their kids' way into a special opportunity suck hippo balls, and so do the feeble-minded twits who accept favors and allow this. They're all part of what's wrong with the world.

In junior high school a teacher refused to let my friend give me "cuts" in the lunch line even though I had a shortened lunch period because of a science project. Then (weeks later if not months) she gave a girl cuts in the lunch line herself and when I complained to her she said she couldn't believe I even remembered the time she wouldn't let me do it. So... pretty incredibly petty.

I'm not still mad about it now and I have limits to what I'll carry around with me in my head but I still remember it all these years later which is actually kind of sad.

My father, from the family desktop: You changed the settings!
Me: What did I change?
Him: *indistinct grumbling*
Me: *gets up, walks over* What am I accused of changing?
Him: *in the process of logging into Steam* You changed the- the log-in- thing-
Me: *deadpan* So I logged you out. And logged myself in. So I could use my account.
Him: *indistinct grumbling*

Just to be clear, this is a man who has used a computer almost every day for the last thirty years. He is not confused about being logged out of Steam, he's sulking that I used my own account and he had to take an extra 35 seconds to swap over.
I think I'm gonna change the Netflix password, see if he learns to share then!

[yes, it's my Netflix account]
