I assume most people are straight and most people writing fic in fandom are female, so most of them are straight women who are interested in the men they find attractive for whatever reason... which is why they're telling you they're shallow

They literally gave you the reason. They're not randomly lying about it. IDK what more there is to understand about it, or why that's hard to understand

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe OP is talking about people who say that the female characters are shallow, not that they themselves as fans are shallow. that's how I interpret "people say they can't like female characters because they're shallow" anyway

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see, that was confusingly worded.

Well, OP, here's your reason then: people are shallow

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But why aren't there as many blatant female self inserts? Both dudes and ladies write more about dudes. Why?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like there are female self-inserts?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but not to the extent that guys make them.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Women have been shamed into not making female self-inserts ("it's a Mary Sue!")

There's also sometimes a sense of remove writing about men because they're not you and not physically like you. I get a little squicked occasionally writing erotica with female characters, like readers are going to think I'm writing about MY clit. No thanks.

I'm mostly attracted to guys and I'm here for the ships and dicks, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Bit of a tangent but no, I actually don't think dudes write more about dudes. If you think of erotic fanfic as porn, erotic fiction writing women write about dudes whether slash or self insert or otherwise in female-dominated parts of fandom, and erotic fiction writing men tend to write more about women or from women's POV in male-dominated parts of fandom

Most of the latter is terrible tbh... but it's there, straight guys aren't going to want to read a story focused on Humongo the Bigdick

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so fucking bad though

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It really, truly is

And I've read enough of it to tell "terrible female POV with totally wrong biology" is one of the predominant trends

WAY more than any story that focuses on the male character existing or having emotions

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
SO much of it is just written-down porno. There's no feeling, no intimacy, no emotion, no real sense of narrative, no immediacy or meaningful lust. It's awful.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That isn't necessarily bad, it's not like women can't enjoy that type of thing too

It's bad because it's just terribly written, and also dear god many female body parts don't work the way they think they do

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not intrinsically bad but it is fundamentally limited and that makes it all the more annoying that it's so common and so poorly executed

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't disagree with any of that lol

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this, for sure.

Yup. I for one like porn and some porn tropes and in theory like that type of thing. but they are generally so badly written and have no understanding of female anatomy that I can't enjoy.

Yeah, you know the story is written by a dude when:
-the cervix is penetrated, and it's said to feel good, too
-"he shot his potent seed into her unprotected womb"
-virgin hole
-they can hear the hymen tear
-"he filled her womb up and kept her plugged until he was certain she was pregnant"

I'm sorry for you eyes and brain : | I hurt mine, too, just writing that. Worse when I had the misfortune of reading those; it's like a train wreck and you can't stop reading once you've begun.

Good lord, that cervix thing. HOW EVEN.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeesh, there's nothing sexy about the cervix.

See, I think there are blatant female self-inserts. Not so much in m/m-centric fandom (same as how there aren't many male SIs in f/f fandom), but everything m/f-centric seems happy to write them. Used to be mostly original characters, now some of it is OCs and a bunch is unabashed "deliberately formatted so you can insert your name" readerfic.

[personal profile] type_wild 2019-06-30 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've comes across some m/m fic where the guys have OC female BFFs to give them relationship advice and cheer them on. Thinking about it now, though, it's been years.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because blatant female self-inserts get labelled Mary Sues and mocked mercilessly. At least when I was coming up in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shallow caricatures of women crafted by men"
This is very obviously talking about female characters
Who are shallow caricatures
And who are created by men

Read, then post.

In fairness to AYRT, it's a confusing pronoun reference problem

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - No need to be a jerk about it.
