International travel

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Any fun trips coming up? Any travel woes, tips, etc?

I just applied for Global Entry after a brutally long wait through customs last weekend when I returned to the US. The people I was traveling with had Global Entry so zipped through while I literally waited for an hour through a packed room with nasty TSA people yelling at people randomly, and random assholes cutting in line. Plus I think it comes with Precheck so I could skip security lines. Definitely seems worth the application fee with how much (work) travel I have coming up...

Man, I'm weird, I always enjoy going through security lines., but I love airports in general. It's people-watching nirvana. Watching everyone pass 30 signs telling them how to load their shit on the conveyor and then watching them get yelled at because JESUS FUCKING CHRIST TAKE YOUR DAMN COAT OFF, LAPTOP GOES IN A SEPARATE BIN, LEARN TO READ HOLY SHIT!

I could just eat popcorn and watch the chaos forever.

Hahaha I wish I had your chill! I hate standing in line for a long time lugging around heavy baggage, surrounded by asshole TSA agents and stupid people trying to play dumb when caught with large containers of liquid at the conveyor belt.

But this last trip I took with the friends who had Global Entry was amazing beyond my horrible wait in the customs line. Because we booked tickets together, I got to mooch their TSA Pre-check, and I was absolutely astounded that you *don't* have to take *anything* out of your bags, or take off your coat and shoes, you just toss it on the belt and strut through a metal detector like it ain't no thang.

The Vancouver airport was hell. When we arrived, we had to go through an insane queue. We walked three miles in the airport going back and forth. It was so surreal. D:

Same. I show up at the airport with my belt in my bag, no jewelry or anything in my pockets, unlace my shoes while in line, LET'S DO THIS THING! ...and I'm stuck behind someone who has to fuss with everything at the last minute.

I'm in Germany, which for my part is a different part of Europe than I usually am. The heat wave is getting less murderous. I made the mistake of packing my small suitcase, underestimating the fact that Germany has books I can't easily get at home and now I've gone and fallen hard for Tokyo Girls.

Oh no! Haha, I usually pack way too many books. I've literally lugged a bookshelf worth of books when I moved overseas... four times. I don't think I even read all the books, I just didn't want to toss them so decided it was super important that I take them with me.

I was an exchange student here and there were some boxes shipped home at the end of that *g* I travel with an ereader, but it's a dangerous business to be picking up the first book of a manga you've wanted to check out when I'd have to order it online and pay for international shipping if I was at home.

I am hoping to plan my first solo trip next year. Got a lot of advice from Reddit about it. :D

I would love to apply for Global Entry but there are no places to interview in Oklahoma OR Kansas. I'd have to drive 6+ hours to find one. :/

Eek, that does suck about the interview! I'm in a big city so I'm just assuming there are options for me, but it's a bit annoying anyway. I have been flying quite a bit lately so the pre-check thing would be so worth it on its own, but it was one bad customs line that threw me over the edge and made me take the time to apply and cough up the application fee.

My recent trip to Mexico was great, mostly. The elevation got to me for a little while, and then I had a major migraine. But in spite of that, the trip was amazing.

No plans in the near future, sadly. I do have some dream trips, but no money right now for any of it.

I love traveling, honestly, but it's hard to find the money, and even harder to find good travel buddies I can trust and get along with for that long and enjoy myself with.
