International travel

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Any fun trips coming up? Any travel woes, tips, etc?

I just applied for Global Entry after a brutally long wait through customs last weekend when I returned to the US. The people I was traveling with had Global Entry so zipped through while I literally waited for an hour through a packed room with nasty TSA people yelling at people randomly, and random assholes cutting in line. Plus I think it comes with Precheck so I could skip security lines. Definitely seems worth the application fee with how much (work) travel I have coming up...

Man, I'm weird, I always enjoy going through security lines., but I love airports in general. It's people-watching nirvana. Watching everyone pass 30 signs telling them how to load their shit on the conveyor and then watching them get yelled at because JESUS FUCKING CHRIST TAKE YOUR DAMN COAT OFF, LAPTOP GOES IN A SEPARATE BIN, LEARN TO READ HOLY SHIT!

I could just eat popcorn and watch the chaos forever.

Hahaha I wish I had your chill! I hate standing in line for a long time lugging around heavy baggage, surrounded by asshole TSA agents and stupid people trying to play dumb when caught with large containers of liquid at the conveyor belt.

But this last trip I took with the friends who had Global Entry was amazing beyond my horrible wait in the customs line. Because we booked tickets together, I got to mooch their TSA Pre-check, and I was absolutely astounded that you *don't* have to take *anything* out of your bags, or take off your coat and shoes, you just toss it on the belt and strut through a metal detector like it ain't no thang.

The Vancouver airport was hell. When we arrived, we had to go through an insane queue. We walked three miles in the airport going back and forth. It was so surreal. D:

I'm in Germany, which for my part is a different part of Europe than I usually am. The heat wave is getting less murderous. I made the mistake of packing my small suitcase, underestimating the fact that Germany has books I can't easily get at home and now I've gone and fallen hard for Tokyo Girls.

I am hoping to plan my first solo trip next year. Got a lot of advice from Reddit about it. :D

I would love to apply for Global Entry but there are no places to interview in Oklahoma OR Kansas. I'd have to drive 6+ hours to find one. :/

My recent trip to Mexico was great, mostly. The elevation got to me for a little while, and then I had a major migraine. But in spite of that, the trip was amazing.

No plans in the near future, sadly. I do have some dream trips, but no money right now for any of it.

I love traveling, honestly, but it's hard to find the money, and even harder to find good travel buddies I can trust and get along with for that long and enjoy myself with.

"Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret #1 - what are your favorite older anime? What do you remember most nostalgically? What still holds up?

Re: "Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
90's anime or earlier, right? I refuse to think of post-millennium anime as being old, haha..

I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop in its entirety since high school, but I did watch a couple of episodes within the last two years and I thought it was still pretty good.

I think all the Miyazaki movies definitely hold up, though I was disappointed that my three-year-old niece couldn't sit still during Totoro. Maybe I'll give her another year or two.

The Pokemon anime does NOT hold up. It has cute bits and some fun elements, but the writing is really cheesy and the plots are honestly kind of boring.

Watching Eva on Netflix now, and I definitely do think it holds up, but I also think you have to have some patience with older animation and it might be a bit rough for a first-anime-ever or younger viewer.

I re-watched Cardcaptor Sakura a couple of years ago and good god, that is one brilliant children's cartoon. It's consistently entertaining, and even though it's three times the length of the manga, it never feels like filler (it also does away with the manga's worst flaws and adds the best character of them all). The production values were above average as I recall them, and the whole thing was just such a joy.

Digimon Tamers is nearing 20 so it probably also qualifies as "classic" by now.

I've got a lot of nostalgia for the first Pokémon series, but I haven't watched any of that in ages and I don't think I'd be able to judge it objectively if I did. On the same note, I adore Detective Conan but I mostly read the manga.

Rewatching (and rereading) Petshop of Horrors now, Leon is really aggravating, but the atmosphere of the stories is still incredible.

I still love Evangelion. Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favorite anime of all time and the whole thing (in sub form at least) is still beautiful. I loved the music and vibe of Cowboy Bebop (but agree with secret 1 that Champloo is better overall). Trigun is still excellent. The subbed Sailor Moon series is good but the animation has suffered some over time.

I am always, always going to love The Vision of Escaflowne. My god, it was all the best parts of shoujo and mecha and fantasy all crammed into one and it was my goddamned jam. Allen Schezar is always going to be my Best Boy. Dilandau's always going to be my favorite psycho brat. Hitomi's such a good protag.

I love, love, love Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I kept a spreadsheet first time I watched it to keep track of characters, but, by golly, it was worth it.

I'm also incredibly fond of First Gundam.

Would it be wrong to...

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
...make modifications to a novelty gift you purchased from a, erm, internet entrepreneur, before presenting it as a gift to somebody? I wouldn't claim I made it or anything, and the seller didn't say no modifications. I just want to remove the flimsier parts, make the item sturdier, and add a little something to it. But I'd feel bad if the seller really thought of it as their special project and randomly saw it in its changed form but still recognized it. I myself tried hard to create a gift similar to this one but failed with crappy materials, so I know what a pain it can be.

The gift doesn't need to be given any time soon, so I might luck out and find something I *can* make the thing out of, but if not, I'll probably just modify this thing.

I don't see why that would be wrong? If you bought it, you can do whatever you want with it.

Once you buy it, it belongs to you. You could set it on fire if you wanted and frankly, the seller doesn't have a right to specify no modifications to the product they sell to people.

as an actual internet vendor of novelty things, you do whatever the fuck you want to the product. I don't lovingly craft one of a kind items that feel like my babies, I smash materials together into a finished product that I think is worth your money. if you get it and decide it's not exactly up to your standards, well, you already bought it, what should I care if you want to mod it a bit? have at it. you're not asking me for a refund, after all, so I already love you.

unless you're talking about, like, an actual piece of art. I imagine artists are a bit more touchy than a crafter like me.

I mean, you probably don't intend to make photos of your modded end product and shove it in the seller's face so I don't see why this would be any problem.

Ugh. My family watches Blue Bloods. I knew I shouldn't watch it, but I decided to give it a try. Episode 1, Danny tortures a guy to find out where he hid a little girl. But it is okay because the guy is a pedo, and everyone is angry when the lawyer sister is mad at him even though she's right. Second episode, similar setup to the Goetz case, except this time they are actual known gang members and had guns. Just for the purpose of making the Goetz stand-in be totally justified.

Sorry, mom. I know you wanted us to watch this together. But this is really terrible.
