"Classic" Anime

Inspired by secret #1 - what are your favorite older anime? What do you remember most nostalgically? What still holds up?

Re: "Classic" Anime

90's anime or earlier, right? I refuse to think of post-millennium anime as being old, haha..

I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop in its entirety since high school, but I did watch a couple of episodes within the last two years and I thought it was still pretty good.

I think all the Miyazaki movies definitely hold up, though I was disappointed that my three-year-old niece couldn't sit still during Totoro. Maybe I'll give her another year or two.

The Pokemon anime does NOT hold up. It has cute bits and some fun elements, but the writing is really cheesy and the plots are honestly kind of boring.

Watching Eva on Netflix now, and I definitely do think it holds up, but I also think you have to have some patience with older animation and it might be a bit rough for a first-anime-ever or younger viewer.

Yeah, it might be a year or longer before she can sit through a whole movie.

Even some five and six year old kids can get restless.

That's fair! I just feel sad because she's way more into CGI stuff, and I wonder if that's "spoiling" her for animation - more movement, goofy gags, visually easier to understand... she latches on to Frozen, Moana, and freaking Boss Baby well enough but traditional animation is harder for her.

I re-watched Cardcaptor Sakura a couple of years ago and good god, that is one brilliant children's cartoon. It's consistently entertaining, and even though it's three times the length of the manga, it never feels like filler (it also does away with the manga's worst flaws and adds the best character of them all). The production values were above average as I recall them, and the whole thing was just such a joy.

Digimon Tamers is nearing 20 so it probably also qualifies as "classic" by now.

I've got a lot of nostalgia for the first Pokémon series, but I haven't watched any of that in ages and I don't think I'd be able to judge it objectively if I did. On the same note, I adore Detective Conan but I mostly read the manga.

my brother got his kids into Detective Conan and they LOVE it. the oldest is nine and the youngest (who watched it) is three. (he has six kids, 9-1 with another due in October)

Detective Conan! I have to admit, I still watch the specials/movies when they come out. Especially the Kaito crossovers.

To be fair, I also still watch the Lupin movies as well.

Cardcaptor Sakura held up for me (mostly) the first time I revisited it, but the most recent time I tried, it was hard to stay interested. It very much did start to feel like filler after a while. I agree that it's better than the manga, but I think it could have benefited by being half as long or less. I also found much of the plot and most of the characters twee and shallow, which was a first. But maybe I've just gotten too far from the target age.

I will love the original Saint Seiya in all its cheesy ridiculous OTT glory until I die.

Rewatching (and rereading) Petshop of Horrors now, Leon is really aggravating, but the atmosphere of the stories is still incredible.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, man, Leon/D was one of my first proper slash ships. I should re-read that at some point too.

Re: "Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's weird, I was never the biggest fan of Leon (and tbf, I didn't have a strong attachment for D either) but when I tried the Shin Pet Shop of Horrors it really didn't have the soul the first series did.

Part of it really seemed like it was because Leon's replacement was just kind of crappy.

Re: "Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
<3 PSOH! Leon is such an ass, but I love how D is always messing with him.

Oh wow, someone else who’s seen the Petshop anime! Worth a rewatch? (I kind of remember the chosen stories being fine but maybe not the strongest ones.)

And yeah on Leon. I got a bit of a shock on a recent re-read (and reminder of how old these and the translations are) where he refers to a crossdresser pejoratively. All sorts of yikes now.

I only read the manga and it still amuses me to no end that an artist who is just... really bad at drawing animals would choose to draw a manga about a magical pet shop, of all things.

I still love Evangelion. Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favorite anime of all time and the whole thing (in sub form at least) is still beautiful. I loved the music and vibe of Cowboy Bebop (but agree with secret 1 that Champloo is better overall). Trigun is still excellent. The subbed Sailor Moon series is good but the animation has suffered some over time.

Re: "Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes to these, Utena is AWESOME. I watched it recently, and it's eerie and weird enough where the fact that it's 90's animation doesn't even matter.

Re: "Classic" Anime

(Anonymous) 2019-07-03 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Utena is my favorite as well. I watched those washed-out old CPM DVDs over and over again. It was an absolute thrill to get the remasters in the States.

I am always, always going to love The Vision of Escaflowne. My god, it was all the best parts of shoujo and mecha and fantasy all crammed into one and it was my goddamned jam. Allen Schezar is always going to be my Best Boy. Dilandau's always going to be my favorite psycho brat. Hitomi's such a good protag.

It's been a while since I rewatched it but I love that when weird shit goes down in the beginning, Hitomi is the one to figure out how to draw away the dragon from Van and act on it.

She has guts!

I loved that show and Hitomi was fantastic.

Aww, I loved Escaflowne. I remember first watching it on Fox Kids, but they pulled it after only a few episodes or something. After watching the entire thing in high school, it was clear why - definitely doesn't pass the "kid show" filters in the US. A great show though, I remember liking Hitomi, Vaan (sp?) and Dilandau a lot (that gender twist, I remember thinking it was so nuts.)

Yessssss. I love the OAV and the series, everyone is just amazing. The art is beautiful, and Dance of Curse will always be my jam.

I still don't understand or accept the ending, but I still love Escaflowne anyway.

I love, love, love Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I kept a spreadsheet first time I watched it to keep track of characters, but, by golly, it was worth it.

I'm also incredibly fond of First Gundam.
