Lotso was a tyrant, though.

I hated the Toy Story 4 ending.

I was sympathetic to Gabby Gabby though, to be fair she only schemed for a doubious organ transplant and not the death of Woody and all his friends.

Yeah - I was really unhappy with the ending but the Gabby Gabby bit was the only bit I actually liked. I thought it was heartwarming. I thought that Woody leaving all of his friends behind for Bo Peep was lousy.

I agree so much! I can’t believe Woody is fine with leaving Buzz, Jessie and the others for Bo Peep either. He knows that kids might love one toy for some time and move on to having a new favorite toy. I also thought it sucked that Jessie barely had anything to do in the movie considering she’s also been through the “favorite toy who was forgotten” deal too.

I wonder what the breakdown by age of who loved the ending and who didn't. It seems people who grew up with the movies are more inclined to dislike it. I was a teenager when the first film came out and I loved his ending and it resonated with me quite deeply.

And no, he didn't leave his friends for Bo, it was more complicated than that.

I was 9 when the first film was released and so I was just outside of the kind of kid who really grew up with the franchise. I mean, yes, I watched Toy Story and loved it a lot, but I was 13 when Toy Story 2 was released and though I had no shame at that point saying that I loved that movie I was more interested in dreaming about marrying Freddie Prinze Jr, so my attachment to the franchise isn't as deeply connected with my childhood as others who are younger than me. I love all the films and I actually really loved Toy Story 4. I think since I'm 33 now I understand that there's more to life than having fun time adventures with my best friends I've spent a lot of time with (if that is the reason why nonnie doesn't like Woody parting ways with his friends).

I agree about things being more complicated than just Woody leaving his friends. Woody's journey in Toy Story 4 felt like reaching a point in a parent's life when they realize that it's OK to live their own life. They don't have to make their life about their child anymore.

I disagree about Woody leaving his friends behind.
Woody realized that if Bonnie lost him she wouldn't miss him but if she lost Forky or maybe Jessie she would be upset. Woody has no obligation to keep being Bonnie's toy just so he could sit in a closet and be happy that his friends are being played with. There's more to a toy's life than just being ONE child's toy that mostly stays in her room/house. That is a path many toys take, but in Toy Story 3 we see toys can also be the kind of toy that is played with by many at a daycare or school. And then there's Toy Story 4 where Bo and her peers are lost toys that do whatever they want. It was really beautiful that Woody and Bo Peep reunite and go on their own adventures rather than dedicate their lives to finding a child to exclusively play with them for a few years.

Lotso thought it was okay to basically have toys tortured though, considering the treatment of the toys in the Caterpillar Room. Gabby Gabby was just kind of manipulative, and she did offer Woody's voicebox back tbf. Hard to have compassion for someone like Lotso.

Wow - do you think you could have tagged this with FUCKING SPOILERS???

it's been two weeks.

OP

I submitted it with a spoiler warning.

If something's still in the cinema it's fair to expect a spoiler warning. I live 200km from the nearest cinema; we can't all drop everything to see something right away.

Woody tried to help him out in the end when they were on the belt towards the trash and Lotso stabbed him in the back, leaving him and his friends to be freakin' burned to death. Kinda hard to trust that bear after all that or offer him another chance. Besides, Lotso treated his other toy companions (Baby and Clown dude) like crap.
