I'm all for reinterpretations of classic stories, but I'm like 95% sure Disney made Ariel black for the live action remake because they knew it'd cause a lot of controversy and would be a way to market the movie. Doesn't make me all confident that it was done benevolently considering that the creative team behind it is overwhelmingly white and the director is a white guy who has only made movies with white leads. Diversity doesn't mean much if it's only superficial.

Everything Disney does is done purely for commercial, financial reasons. So, I definitely agree that it's very cynical on their part. That said, I still think you have to take it at face value a little bit. For all that their intentions are largely cynical and meaningless, it's still more a positive thing than not in terms of its effects. IMO.

That isn't true at all. You think a bunch of little girls are going to think, "Well, I was going to be excited about this princess that looks like me but I think Disney is just doing this for publicity! Ugh." No, the people who these characters matter to the most don't give a shit about the politics behind it. They are just excited to see a princess/superhero/whatever that looks like them.

Sorry, guess we can just have all white ones again?

IA but we also shouldn't give Disney much credit for it

Companies won't change unless people support them when they change.

Sure, but that doesn't mean Disney's lack of creative diversity should be overlooked or they should be lauded for their decision when it's 100% financial.

No shit it is 100% financial. Look, if you are looking for morality, stop looking towards companies. Just be glad that Disney has enough faith in diversity to take the financial chance on it.

Exactly, kids don't understand the why's or how's behind these choices, they see a main character that's like them and it makes them happy. And that's a good thing.

I see it the same way I see corporations being all rainbows and glitter for Pride month

Yeah, it's 100% a cynical and obvious moneygrab, and it doesn't make the corporation or creators any better people for having done it

But it says a good thing about the rest of society that it's becoming normalized enough so that the way to make cynical and obvious moneygrabs is rainbows and glitter cause that's what the analysts have determined is what a financially significant portion of the public wants, enough to outweigh any losses

I know nothing about the actress, but apparently she can sing, unlike some *cough*Emma Watson*cough* people, so I’m cautiously optimistic.

I misread the first tweet I saw about it and thought it said Halle Barry and was like, "Okay, weird flex, but still cool, I'd watch it."

Also, I lol at the tweets/comments all, "WHIIIIINE, IT'S A DANISH FOLKTALE SHE CAN'T BE BLACK!!"

Dude. Dudes. Dudettes. Huge difference between 'a folktale about a mythical creature written by a Danish (white) person' and 'a folktale about a Danish person'.

esp when the Disney version so completely removed it from any kind of real-world cultural or historical context

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-07-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Disney's TLM is more like one of those 'inspired by true events' horror films where really, they just used the barebones concept.

And Frog Prince was German and Beauty and the Beast an apologia for arranged marriage. Disney set the former in the Jazz age America and loaded the latter with gay subtext.

Speaking of which, Titus Burgess or Billy Porter for Ursula.

I just think: don't fix what ain't broken.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-07-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think the idea is that having only one black princess in the Disney animated films is something that needs fixing.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-07-05 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
But why not make an entirely new princess movie with a black lead instead? They have the means.

But why is no one asking how will they reinterpret the dickcastle for the dvd cover? That's like five times more marketing and controversy right there!
