you know i'm really inexperienced with fanfic etiquette and i found a fic i really liked but that hadn't been updated in a year. i thought it might be awkward if i commented, but this secret tells me i just should!

I definitely think it's good to leave a comment on an old fic-- people in active fandoms sometimes give fics a really short 'shelf life', in terms of leaving comments, but commenting on older fics can lead to a really rewarding exchange! I've experienced that as a reader and a writer.

Absolutely! As anon said, fics can be a flash-in-the-pans thing as far as visibility, but receiving reviews on something you've written ages ago is heartwarming. I wrote Star Trek fic in the 2000s, and a fifteen year old that wasn't even born when I'd written it found it via a rec list on Tumblr from another user who was new to Star Trek via Discovery.

You'll be surprised how many writers still occasionally look back on their old fics even if the account is inactive, and I promise that if they didn't want people to comment, they'd just remove the fic entirely.
