you know i'm really inexperienced with fanfic etiquette and i found a fic i really liked but that hadn't been updated in a year. i thought it might be awkward if i commented, but this secret tells me i just should!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely think it's good to leave a comment on an old fic-- people in active fandoms sometimes give fics a really short 'shelf life', in terms of leaving comments, but commenting on older fics can lead to a really rewarding exchange! I've experienced that as a reader and a writer.

Absolutely! As anon said, fics can be a flash-in-the-pans thing as far as visibility, but receiving reviews on something you've written ages ago is heartwarming. I wrote Star Trek fic in the 2000s, and a fifteen year old that wasn't even born when I'd written it found it via a rec list on Tumblr from another user who was new to Star Trek via Discovery.

You'll be surprised how many writers still occasionally look back on their old fics even if the account is inactive, and I promise that if they didn't want people to comment, they'd just remove the fic entirely.

K. Which do you prefer I leave on your fic

1. Spacefiller comment because I've got nothing to say of my own free will about your fic but since you're begging for an inflated comment number, here you go.
2. "PLZ UPDATE NOW"

Because that's all you'll get when you beg for comments uwu!!!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Who said anything about begging for comments? The prize for the comment that has nothing to do with the OP goes to...

What on Earth does this have to do with the secret?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing about begging for comments. I believe this is in response to be people feeling weird about leaving comments on fic that is more than few months/years old.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm failing to see the part of this secret where the OP is begging for comments or saying that someone should. Are they not simply saying that it is kind to leave compliments on fic you like and that it makes both the author of the fic and the author of comment happy?

Hmm. I don't think it was necessary to be this dick-ish about it.

It's a shame you're not capable of leaving a thoughtful, sincere compliment, but fortunately not everyone is limited to those two choices by their lack of effort and creativity.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
As so many other users have told you, OP isn't begging for comments. I'm not sure if you're dumb or trolling.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, everyone else has already put you in your spot, but let's pretend for a second this secret WAS about "begging" for comments. This attitude would still be annoying and uncalled for. How dare fic writers be human beings who enjoy a little validation when they put their creative work out for others' free enjoyment?!?!

Nothing makes me happier than someone dropping a comment on a fic that is 15+ years old. Much as I might cringe at it, it totally makes it worth having posted it to know that even TODAY someone's day was made better by something I made.

I am always delighted when I get a comment on an old fanfic, and I always comment back. Nice to know that responding can give the reader warm fuzzies too.

Yes, yes, yes!
I'm always delighted to know an old fic can still entertain, and love getting comments of any kind. :D

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I worry that commenting on a fic for a fandom the writer is no longer interested in may actually make them feel like shit/guilty for no longer being interested in that fic/fandom. Or make them resent the fic or remember it exists and decide "time to delete this, I don't want to be pestered about this old fic or give people false hope anymore". I'm glad you had a good experience with that OP, but it's not always the case :(

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it might? But that's not within your control. The comment you just typed that's perfectly innocuous to most people might send someone over the edge and they'll go on a spree of bank robbery and puppy kidnapping all over the country, but you can only worry about other peoples' reactions up until a point.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
PS, that was very lovely of you, OP :)

I've got fics on AO3 that are over 20 years old (in an ongoing fandom) and I still get the occasional comment, which is delightful!

aw this is sweet! i'm glad you had a positive interaction :) this is a nice little encouragment bc i psyche myself out all the time about whether people want to hear anything from me when i enjoy their fan work. but really, if they don't then it is hardly a big deal. and if they do then it's all the better, right? thank you for sharing~

My posted fic was mainly in the early to mid 00s, but I'm still very much an active lurker in fandom and I love getting the odd comment on my nearly 20 years old works. I can see from the ff.net stats I still get hits, so it makes me super happy that some of them take a chance and comment. Met some new friends that way!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing makes me happier than getting a comment on a fic - an old one, a new one, a "bad" one, a "good" one, whatever. Never be afraid to comment on a fic!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone recently commented on a fic I posted 8 years ago for a rare pair in a small fandom and it made my day that they had seen canon and found my fic and liked it enough to comment.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding x whatever degree.

No, comments aren't mandatory, but they're definitely nice. Whether it's on my oldest fic or one I posted last week, I always appreciate it. People will worry that all they have to say is "I really liked it", but that still means something!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww -- YES. I actually haven't had much luck with author response when I've been the one leaving comments, but on my own fic? Love it. I poured my heart into my work in this one fandom I felt forced out of, and I really miss it... I still write for myself, just can't publish it. So on the rare occasion someone leaves a nice comment, it always makes my day, knowing that others are still getting enjoyment out of what I created... and it's like I'm not actually dead to the fandom after all. It's an amazing, validating feeling. (and has nothing to do with comment count... wtf?)
