IDK, I mostly just see the 'representation' thing used as a strawman for demanding the Ship Of Choice be made canon. Like, it's definitely most people's go-to battle cry, but it's still all about which characters they want to see together.

Very rarely do I see "this show could use more representation" in isolation. It's almost always "this ship needs to sail because representation!"

In one of my fandoms the by and far most popular m/m ship have canonically not met, but you wouldn't guess that when there are people harassing devs on twitter to confirm their ship and complaining how homophobic it is that they haven't. There's a couple of confirmed gay characters in canon, but the two most conventionally attractive men who do not know each other aren't a confirmed couple, therefore homophobia.
