IME that's a batshit minority, not the norm. Granted, the minority is loud and very annoying.

For real. This shit needs to die. It's stupid.

IDK, I mostly just see the 'representation' thing used as a strawman for demanding the Ship Of Choice be made canon. Like, it's definitely most people's go-to battle cry, but it's still all about which characters they want to see together.

Very rarely do I see "this show could use more representation" in isolation. It's almost always "this ship needs to sail because representation!"

There are definitely people who do care about representation in the abstract.

In one of my fandoms the by and far most popular m/m ship have canonically not met, but you wouldn't guess that when there are people harassing devs on twitter to confirm their ship and complaining how homophobic it is that they haven't. There's a couple of confirmed gay characters in canon, but the two most conventionally attractive men who do not know each other aren't a confirmed couple, therefore homophobia.

My comment on this isn't about the representation excuse really, but I think people have been coming up with a lot of justifications for why they ship non-m/f pairings (as opposed to admitting they just like the idea of two characters together) for years and years, but it has evolved into this offensive rather than defensive/explanatory thing.

I think a reason like "I slash the male leads because there are literally no female regulars on this buddy cop show" is an excuse that holds more water than "I ship them because it's the woke thing to do" because... do you really ship them? I can't help but feel that a person's shipping is not genuine when they pull that excuse. Meanwhile, I have seen people (though not particularly recently) pull out the former excuse for slashing two male characters in a co-ed ensemble show where great female characters are right there (probably because the "no well-developed female characters --> m/m slash" concept was an observation made in scholarly works about fandom back in the day and some people took that as the Official Reason why they slash characters and tried to apply it to all cases), and I would be sitting there, thinking "Instead of acting like the female characters don't exist, just admit you like the idea of these two dudes making out. You don't need another reason."

I mean I think you can care about both, I enjoy rep when I get it but I'll also ship whatever characters that appeal to me for fun, but it also isn't hard for me to ship canon so there's plenty of m/m and f/f romances I love in media because we've been getting more over the years.

We all do it differently.

Original comment OP here to thank you for turning it into a secret <3

Seriously, not a single person who claims "but muh representation!!" actually give a shit about representation, literally all they want is their cute boys OTP to be canon. I'm seeing the hypocrisy in action right now in the Stranger Things fandom. ***SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3***** They introduce a new character who is later revealed to be gay, and the shippers of Will/Mike are outraged it was her and not Will who's gay******SPOILERS*****

Never mind how the Voltron fandom showed its ass once Shiro was revealed gay. Literally the whole Voltron tag on tumblr was just "....this means Lance is bi!! omg Klance parallels!! lol who is Shiro again?"

This is a completely insane thing to say

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what's being said then, but I think there are people in the world who do genuinely and sincerely care about representation.

but I think there are people in the world who do genuinely and sincerely care about representation

Of course there are, but I'm talking about fandom culture on tumblr. Most tumblrinas who ship two men and claim "creators should make my OTP canon because LGBT representation matters!!" almost unequivocally do not give an actual shit about representation and really only just want their OTP canon. They prove this time and time again when creators choose to make characters who aren't in their OTP gay and the shippers flip out in rage and disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblrinas? In 2019? really, man?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
What's your issue?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Or as with the comments on #3, you have people of one sexual orientation claiming exclusive ownership over headcanons.
