My comment on this isn't about the representation excuse really, but I think people have been coming up with a lot of justifications for why they ship non-m/f pairings (as opposed to admitting they just like the idea of two characters together) for years and years, but it has evolved into this offensive rather than defensive/explanatory thing.

I think a reason like "I slash the male leads because there are literally no female regulars on this buddy cop show" is an excuse that holds more water than "I ship them because it's the woke thing to do" because... do you really ship them? I can't help but feel that a person's shipping is not genuine when they pull that excuse. Meanwhile, I have seen people (though not particularly recently) pull out the former excuse for slashing two male characters in a co-ed ensemble show where great female characters are right there (probably because the "no well-developed female characters --> m/m slash" concept was an observation made in scholarly works about fandom back in the day and some people took that as the Official Reason why they slash characters and tried to apply it to all cases), and I would be sitting there, thinking "Instead of acting like the female characters don't exist, just admit you like the idea of these two dudes making out. You don't need another reason."
