*high fives* Oh hell yes. YANA, OP.

I borrowed Throne of Glass a few weeks ago and noped out after 3 pages.

I loved this secret! Things you don’t like just seem to be EVERY WHERE like you can’t even ignore because you can’t unsee

I tried this series because I liked the titles and... yeah. Couldn't finish book two. So much YA these days reminds me of bad fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how much energy that *used* to go into fanfiction - both writing and reading - does just go into bad YA now...

A lot, I'm betting. I think both publishers and writers discovered that you don't need very high quality writing to hook an audience if you've got the right concept and tropes. People will overlook a weak plot and underdeveloped characters so long as it hits the right notes in other places.

I was wondering where I’d heard of this author before. This was one of the YA novelists who got yelled at on Tumblr for being “heteronormative.”

I'm always slightly salty that I can't stand these books. Because the titles are GREAT and the covers are really appealing to me!

But, ugh, the stories themselves? Ugh.

The titles really are lovely. I've seen the books around everywhere but I appreciate this warning that I shouldn't bother.

I think she's grown tremendously as an author since writing Throne of Glass. (That was originally on Wattpad and it shows.) Even with the growth, though, I just don't like her books and her fandom is kinda creepy.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve seen her books all over Instagram, so checked out a few from the library. I could hardly get through them and returned them only half-read.

I'm the OP of this (thank you for making this a secret!) and I'm so glad that the comments (so far) are going the opposite way I feared!

Just to make sure: I might not "like" pics of them on instagram most days, but I also don't say anything to the fans. Tho, I'm sometimes tempted to answer those "Do you prefer Throne of Glass or A Court of Something Something?" with "I dislike them equally."

It's not even that they're YA (... those sex scenes, though) or full of clichés, I just honestly think they're bad. I'm an adult who reads YA fairly regularly when I need something quick to read or the concept genuinly appeals to me, so I've read my fair share of them and these are honestly the worst (not counting bad YA that are also not popular). It keeps baffling me how they win all the Goodreads awards every year (unless something Harry Potter related is also nominated)

Goodreads is easily gamed and not a very big network when it comes to activity.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What's the deal with Goodreads' ratings? It happens ALL THE FREAKING TIME that I'll read reviews for a book on Amazon that are mostly postive, then go on Goodreads and they're mediocre/negative. I don't know if Goodreads people are just pickier/have higher standards, or a lot of the Amazon positive reviews are fake or what, but it always confuses me.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
probably a selection bias thing

on amazon, you're only going to bother leaving a review, most of the time, if you want to support it. your reviews aren't collected anywhere as a whole body of opinion. But on goodreads, the incentive is to have The Most Books Read on your account to show off, and that means you're more likely to give a rating for every single book you read, including the ones you don't like. Also, I think there's a small influence of like...wanting to seem like you have ~taste~, and only giving so many books 5-star reviews?

Personally I'm also pretty strict about making my goodreads reviews honest reflections of how much I liked something, because I want to get recommended things I like, but I don't want to give anyone a bad review on amazon, because I think that can hurt sales a lot?

Oh, ugh, these. I went looking for book recs from other fans in my Beauty and the Beast-ish fandom and a couple of people were gaga for them. I read Throne of Glass and honestly remember jack shit about it except how fucking boring it was.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
...and I didn’t read Throne of Glass, I read A Court of Thorns and Roses. I know it’s bad if I didn’t even remember which one it was.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the cover too, but I couldn't get past the summary. I didn't even borrow it from the library.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ. I remember picking up Throne of Glass, seeing the cover and reading the summary, and expecting a bloodbath with a badass female lead. What I got was a Mary Sue barbie that was wondering which prince should she bang and a meanie that was bad to her.

I'm all for new authors getting in, but I couldn't fathom why reviews were positive for this garbage. It was hands down the worst book I've ever read.
