Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)I want to be very clear that I'm not saying that this is true of you, or anyone else in this thread. Just, liking some female characters doesn't necessarily prove anything about misogyny.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, but the point is if you say you dislike a character for several reasons, one of them being that they get in the way of your ship, everyone and their mother jumps to SECRET MISOGYNY and assumes you do this for every female character or something. While knowing nothing about how you feel about other characters or situations.
When in fact, most female fans don't do that, as we all seem to agree on.
So assuming that female fans who don't like a certain female character = misogyny, ironically means those don't think very highly of other female fans.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)What do you mean by "a reason that's misogynistic"? To me, disliking a female character because they're female is what's misogynistic, disliking them for other reasons is not. For example, one of them I disliked because she had a tendency to intentionally say things to other characters about subjects she knew were sore spots for them, just to hurt them as much as possible. I've known people like that, and it's a shitty way to behave, regardless of gender.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)Well, for example, if someone said they hated a character because she was a slut or because she didn't stay in the kitchen. Obviously those are very extreme examples but hopefully they give you an idea what my point is - of course in reality it's not going to be clear cut, it's a subject of considerable debate, etc.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Ah, ok, yeah, that makes sense. I tend to dislike characters in general for the same reasons regardless of gender (and the same reasons I dislike people in real life tbh), mainly when they just treat other characters horribly for no reason, they're overly judgey of people who are maybe weird but not hurting anyone else, etc. And a lot of it is down to the writing. A character can do something awful without me hating them if they're developed enough that I understand their motivations and can see that they're complex and human with reasons for doing the things they do, who make mistakes like everyone does. If they just seem to be assholes for no reason, I'm more likely to hate them, which I know is largely due to the writing. Like, sometimes I KNOW the writers are being lazy and clearly manipulative and they obviously want the audience to hate a character, so they just make them over the top ridiculously evil and I shouldn't fall for it but sometimes they're just such jerks I can't help but hate them anyway.
