What actually is an "anti"?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like someone to explain calmly, please, without ranting. I've seen it applied really broadly, including:

-people who don't think members of One Direction are secretly fucking; this was the first place I encountered the term, some years ago, when my wife and I discovered the "baby gate" scandal and did a three-day crazy town binge

-people who object to certain pairings (usually those with a significant age gap or where one party is underage; I fairly recently saw someone called an "anti" because they didn't like/didn't want to see Peter Parker/Tony Stark content)

-people who object to romanticized abuse?

But I've also heard reference to, if not directly encountered, far more puritanical/pearl-clutching "antis." I've heard some accounts I'd need to see screenshots to believe (trying to get someone fired for their shipping preferences) and some that sound like regular old internet hysteria (calling someone a pedophile apologist for reading/writing content that is pedophiliac in nature).

I might be on the "conservative" side of F!S for my belief that drawn or illustrated child pornography is, or at least can be, quite harmful, but I'm really curious as to what an "anti" might actually believe.

I also share this question, and I'd like to add on - does "anti" refer only to people who identify themselves as antis? Or is "anti" used to refer to people who might not refer to themselves as antis, but who the person calling them that perceives to be an anti? Because I think that's a really crucial distinction.

http://just-antithings.tumblr.com is one of many blogs with plenty of receipts of how toxic antis are. You sound like you have anti opinions, but if you aren't pro-censorship or threatening and suicide baiting people who draw things you think are "harmful", (common anti talking point; correct answer is that anything can be harmful if you use it for grooming purposes et al) you're not an anti.

So you only use the word "anti" to refer to people that you personally know to have taken part in threatening or suicide-baiting?

Also, what does "pro-censorship" mean? Because that seems like a very vague and broad term.

DA

"Pro-censorship" means you think censorship is OK.

I don't see anything vague about that.

And I agree with AYRT that a pro-censorship disposition is a major signifier of an anti. There are things they do not want on the internet, and they will go to great lengths to get those things banned/removed.

Is it censorship to think that writing certain kinds of fiction is morally wrong? Is it censorship to think that private companies have a right to draw up their own lines about what content is and is not acceptable on their domains, and to have your own opinion about where those lines should be drawn? Because I'm pretty sure some people would call that pro-censorship, but it's ridiculous.

No, none of that is being pro-censorship, it's just being ignorant and ill-educated.

In my opinion, you have to go beyond "not my ship" to having a space devoted to encouraging harassment of people who do ship it.

Alternately if you catch yourself saying something like, "don't reblog that post on a completely different issue from *her,* she's a reylo shipper!"

Little kids use the words “romanticize abuse” when they want to be critical of all sorts of stuff these days, antis aren’t actually that pure or righteous.

i always understood it as meaning someone who goes around and actively harasses ppl who like a thing about how bad they are for liking it in an effort to get them to stop. also tended to have a habit of calling age-gap ships in general, including those between adults, 'pedophillic' or 'abusive'.

but bc the internet is incapable of not ruining the meaning of words i now see ppl slap it on those who simply don't like a ship/character but who aren't going around being rude about it, they just don't want to see it/them. which is allowed, but hey, fandom seems to be forgetting that ppl ARE allowed to have squicks, and are allowed to curate their fandom experiences so that they don't see that content.

some random person blocking you in their own space bc they don't wanna see incest porn/rape porn isn't harassment, that's them making fandom a place they're happy to navigate. but god forbid we allow ppl that right, we've all gotta be okay with actual child-porn now or you're an anti!!
