so how do we all feel about black Ariel?

I'm fine with it as a concept, but it sucks Disney only cares about diversity when it's profitable and it's part of a creatively bankrupt reboot effort.

Disney cares about diversity because people care about diversity because media has made diversity more common because people like diversity...

No, people care about diversity because of the efforts of activists. Disney cares about diversity because it's more profitable.

Bobby Joe in Barbour County, Alabama doesn't care about activists. He does look up to Sam Wilson from the Avengers.

But Disney doesn't give a shit about Bobby Joe's feelings on anything. They're not doing it because of that. Any beneficial effect on Bobby Joe is completely incidental from their point of view. If there's a positive effect on Bobby Joe, that effect exists primarily because of the people and factors which made it a part of Disney's corporate best interest to do those things, not because of any good will on the part of Disney.

(obviously the Bobby Joe framework is also very simplistic but I do see what you mean)

This is not a chicken-and-egg situation, the driver is 100% activism and consumers and society, not Disney.

I think she can actually sing? So that’s what matters most to me. Also she cute. So I’m good.

It’s so stupid seeing white people freak out about black Ariel when they have billions of white female characters to choose from as role models. It’s like black Hermione, I don’t see why not and even if I’m skeptical about whether creators or companies are as progressive as they present them selves to be, as long as the end result is a POC cast in the role of a major white character why would I object?

Yay? I dunno - i doubt i'll see the movie, as that's not a favorite of mine and i'm not all that excited about 99 percent of Disney stuff.

But for fuck's sake, white people. She's a MERMAID. She could be PURPLE. And in the original fairy tale, it says her skin is 'pure and clear as a rose leaf', so actually, it seems she's green.

I've been seeing a lot of "so what?" and share the sentiment.

If she can sing and act, I’m good.

Totes fine with it, though I do have to admit to a moment of going 'oh. huh. okay?' because the Ariel I grew up with is white, so to me, she's always going to default to white.

And I tend to feel conflicted over taking a previously established character and changing their skin color mostly because it does tend to create a level of intellectual dissonance in me and because I feel like it would be better to create a new character, who is black, than take a character who is white and paint them a new color.

I liked the spider man movie and how they handled it? There's a black kid who is spider man! But OH LOOK there's ALL THESE OTHER spider men too, so I'm cool with alt. universes/two takes on the character existing alongside one another but I feel weird when one take is just meant to take over a previous take?

Agreed, honestly. It feels very... hmm. How to describe it... like they're making a big show of having diversity without actually putting in any of the work to do so? "Here, look, Ariel's black" feels like a huge copout when they COULD be coming up with brand new non-white characters and new stories for them instead of just slapping a different coat of paint on something old and acting like it's a big deal.

NAYRT—slapping a new coat of paint and maybe swapping end tables is what Disney does to existing stories, though. Like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince.

I wish she was still going to be a redhead.

Re: What's your opinion of our Disney overlords?

I watched The Little Mermaid like 100 times between the ages of 4 and 6, and for me, the visual aesthetic of Ariel on the screen is kind of important: pale beige, red, green, and purple. The red hair is the real loss. I almost don't understand why you'd even do a remake without the red hair, to be honest. So I feel a bit conflicted about black Ariel, if only because I don't think Ariel's signature flaming red hair would suit black!Ariel, and it seems that Disney agrees, since it looks like she's not going to have the hair in the remake.

HOWEVER, it's not such a big deal to me that I'm going to be salty over it. Priorities are a thing. My priorities are that I'm happy for the people who are getting representation because of this change, and I hope the movie is good and does well.
