How do you motivate yourself to do stuff you don't want to do

I take breaks with small rewards like Youtube vids I want to watch or music or chocolate or time with my cat. Little things to keep me motivated and to give my brain small breaks when I need it.

Like, I tell myself "if you get ______ part done you can take a 5 minute break" or "if you do ____ part of the task you can have 2 bites of chocolate"

my maybe not so helpful answer is that motivation is flighty and superficial and while fun is not useful to try and cultivate. what insead helps heaps more is developing discipine.

tho here's the much more helpful thing to keep in mind! once you actually Start doing somthing it is way easier to just keep on doing it. so sometimes the hardest part is just getting started tbh.

i find breaking down tasks into the next fifteen seconds is sometimes what it takes when i just really dread a task. first thing i need to do to get started is stop goofing off on the internet? then i just focus on the fifteen seconds it will take to do so and once i am standing up off my bed i think of the next fifteen seconds. take out my text book. or get the vacuum out of the closet. or whatever! then once you get into the swing of things you just kinda rock it in that swing. plus if you get distracted its easier to just go oh whoops, okay what in the next fifteen seconds will be the first step to get back on track? instead of spending time reprimanding yourself for being a failure who can't concentrate or something.

thanks for asking this question bc i am currently avoiding choreographing a soft shoe number i need to have ready by monday lmao. so here i go standing tf off my bed and not goofing off on the internet anymore for the next few hours! good luck w whatever you were hoping for motivation for~

Procrastinate until I have something I want to do even less, then do a bunch of stuff on my “oh god this needed doing months ago” list. ... I never said I was good at it. I wish I could trick myself into thinking it was for someone else. It’s not really easier, but if I think someone else might be hurt by my inaction, I get stuff done on time.

For household tasks I use the "seven minute rule" which is something I learned in an outpatient program. I set a timer, do whatever it is for seven minutes, and then I'm allowed to stop. Usually I keep going until it's done, but even if I don't I did seven minutes worth.

I'm a pretty horrible procrastinator, but I've gotten a little better, and one of the things that sometimes helps for me is the "have empathy for your future self" technique. I imagine how I'll feel in [x amount of time] if I continue to put the thing off. Then I imagine how I'll feel if I get the thing done promptly. I know future me will feel way more shitty and tired if I don't do the thing, and the odds are good that if I do the thing future me will feel much better about myself and much more relaxed. I try to hang onto that, and use it to motivate me.
