It's really sad we have to go around posting this stuff as secrets because we're afraid of being shouted down.

Glad you enjoyed the show, OP! I love the book but thought it was fun too. :)

GO fandom is the most chill fandom I've ever been in. Been in it for 5 years now, before the show came out. I think OP is using this more as an excuse to talk about their opinion because I am having difficulty imagining anyone in our fandom shouting someone down over this as the show is well loved by the book fans.

I think it depends on the thing. I don't see many people getting upset when others say they prefer the film Blade Runner to the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I think it's a shame that in other fandoms there are people like you who feel they can't voice a legitimate personal preference for one version over the other. Sometimes you just connect more with the second version of something.

You do you, OP.

I really love both, for different reasons, because they're very different things. I do understand what you mean about the show being so much fun. I'll defi itely watch it much more often than I'll reread the book.

While I don't enjoy the show more (it's fun so far, but I miss all the funny details in the book that the show just doesn't have time to include) I definitely prefer Pratchett's Discworld series over this. I'm less enthusiastic about Gaiman's work, tbh.

As someone who has been in the GO fandom for years, I agree completely. The book really needed some sort of focus, which they fixed in the show by making the focus Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship (thank you Neil!). I remember being pretty irritated trying to get through the middle of the book spending too much time with side characters and subplots I didn't give a rats ass about. It felt too meandering, slow, and dull. Gaiman clearly noticed and has said that that format would not work for a television show, which is why he made some of the changes he did (such as the first half of episode 3, and the revised ending). The show fixed pretty much every issue I had with the book and I was happy with it from start to finish.

Even though I like both authors' work I actually couldn't finish the book. I wouldn't say it was bad at all but the idea what it was "meandering" in parts seems true to me.

I'll probably watch the show but I feel somehow guilty about watching it when I never read the book.

Please don't feel guilty! Watch the show, enjoy the hell, or heaven, out of it. Life's too fucking short for that kind of guilt.

I agree with this comment so much. I loved the changes Gaiman made to add clarity and focus. Ep. 3 and the changed ending were two of my favorite changes from the book version.

Agree on everything in this comment.

I honestly enjoyed both, but I can totally see why people would enjoy the series over the book. It had a little more focus than the book.

It is fun, isn't it? It really put a smile on my face and made me feel happy. :)

I watched the show first and am now reading the book. So far, I agree this is a case where the adaptation is better than the original source.

The show characters' characterizations had very little to do with the book I've loved for 20+ years, so I vastly prefer the book.

"very little"

examples?

+1
When I watched it, it felt like someone had been looking to shipper fanfiction for characterisation to me. I was unsurprised to hear that Michael Sheen did actually go online and read fanfics to research his character =_=
