As someone who has been in the GO fandom for years, I agree completely. The book really needed some sort of focus, which they fixed in the show by making the focus Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship (thank you Neil!). I remember being pretty irritated trying to get through the middle of the book spending too much time with side characters and subplots I didn't give a rats ass about. It felt too meandering, slow, and dull. Gaiman clearly noticed and has said that that format would not work for a television show, which is why he made some of the changes he did (such as the first half of episode 3, and the revised ending). The show fixed pretty much every issue I had with the book and I was happy with it from start to finish.

Even though I like both authors' work I actually couldn't finish the book. I wouldn't say it was bad at all but the idea what it was "meandering" in parts seems true to me.

I'll probably watch the show but I feel somehow guilty about watching it when I never read the book.

Please don't feel guilty! Watch the show, enjoy the hell, or heaven, out of it. Life's too fucking short for that kind of guilt.

I agree with this comment so much. I loved the changes Gaiman made to add clarity and focus. Ep. 3 and the changed ending were two of my favorite changes from the book version.
