I don't think the popularity of certain ships supports that argument necessarily--and some canon pairings are very popular--but the people tying themselves into knots to argue that their ship is more progressive rep than this other ship (which I've seen done over a vast variety of oppression olympics rhetoric) obviously don't have their emotions in the right compartment. It's not that I think those people don't care about rep at all, but they're pretending their priorities are turned up the other way.
