You can get quite a lot of those things via fandom if you're doing it right.

Why does it make someone more of a loser to get those things from fandom than to get them from any of the other things people do with their lives?

Because fandom is only made of two-dimensions. And see my post below.

OK I see your point and I agree with what you wrote below, but I think the same goes for a lot of other interests besides fandom. I mean you could say the same thing of someone who loves writing poetry or taking photographs or making quilts as a hobby, and spends nearly all their time on it.

Yeah, you can get THINGS, but not everything. It can't replace real life. And I know you will say, "I'm not trying to replace real life with fandom!" Well, I'm not talking about you, in that case. But those people ... they're out there. There's a lot of them. I know several of them. And they need help -- probably major therapy. And real friends who don't indulge and enable them.

Edit: And I will also say, most of the things you can get from fandom, you can only truly really get if you step outside of fandom. There are people who attained great success after being fanfic writers, but that's because they were brave enough to submit themselves to the real world. There are people who have made life-long friends through fandom, but they are their friends in real life, too, someone who can actually touch you and hold you when you need someone, someone you can talk about things other than whether or not Snape is really a bottom. There are people who have gained self-esteem from fandom, but only because it helped them go out there and practice that self esteem in their every day life.

Sure I agree with you there!

But self-esteem, happiness, true companionship, success and well-being, they can be found through connections and friendships made through fandom, the enjoyment of debate, participation with others, enjoyment of the arts through fandom, etc. Maybe not success so much but I guess that depends how you see success and what you want to be successful at.

I think fandom is always a part of real life anyway, no one can go live in the world of their favorite show after all. Mostly when they try it's because they have some serious problems and you're right they need help and therapy, I just see them get mocked and insulted for it a lot and that hardly encourages anyone to get that help.

I think that part of the problem, some people take Fandom far too seriously. I have met my fair share at conventions. *Ugh*

Fan-Fiction is a toy, nothing else. And the toys don't even belong to you in the slightest, you have no right to use them to begin with. Many of the over-invested ones that need help, start to view the characters as something that belongs to them. This includes some way creepy RPS ficcers. (I think RPS is creepy.)

So...what does that mean? Are you just complaining about people saying "i own this character" or "this character belongs to me?" are wrong/crazy? Or are you suggesting that if you don't legally own a character's copyright you can't say or write pretty much whatever you want about them? The idea of the character is in your head as soon as you read the thing.

As anon says, that depends on the copyright laws in your country. In the UK characters cannot in themselves be copyrighted, so yes, I do have the legal right to write my own stories about any of them I want.

There are trademark considerations to be aware of, but on the whole, a character is an idea - it is only the idea as fixed in JKR's actual words which are copyrighted. Ideas are not copyrighted, only their material fixed expression.

It would hardly be at her "expense", unless she were somehow paying for it. It's unlikely that you would find a publisher who wanted to take it on, of course, but if you could find people willing to pay for fanfiction, you'd be safe enough.

Oh really? So, in the UK, you have the right to sell Fan-Fiction biased on other peoples characters? Over here, in the USA, that's a nasty lawsuit.

Yes, I know. It's one of the areas where US and UK copyright law is different.

A lot of popular authors trademark aspects of their books, which complicates the issue if you're actually selling your stories. But in the pre-internet days it was quite common for fans to put together amateur compilations of fanfiction and sell them (mostly just to cover costs), and that was legal in the UK.

As far as published stories go, people safely published Sherlock Holmes stories in the UK long before the Conan Doyle estate's copyright expired, without requiring a license.

See, I think it's rude to sell Fan-Fiction. It's not yours to sell. It's like making money on someone else's hard work; they're not your characters or world building to use. (I hate Fan-Ficcers, who think that authors should have no rights. What is the point of creating something if everyone can steal it?) *it's a peeve of mine*

Sherlock Holmes was through permission of the estate, it was in a gray area of being public domain and not public domain. Star Trek had issues with even using namesake in the early 90s.
