Why?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Some longtime fans are upset that Pokémon they've had with them for long as 16 years won't be be playable in the upcoming games, are disappointed with the further casualization of the games, among other things.

I was very surprised to hear that not all pokemon would be included in the newest mainline entry, and the first on a home console no less.

Sure it would have taken extra dev effort, but it just seems lazy. That feature is important to people.

Gotta catch em all, right?

What was even more baffling was that it was revealed (at the end of gameplay stream demo few people watched no less) a week or so after Pokémon Home had been announced. Pokémon Home's predecessor, Pokémon Bank, had the ability to store and transfer every Pokémon, so it was assumed Home would be able to transfer any and every Pokémon to Sword and Shield.

Don't they basically just release the same game over and over again?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda, but there's enough differences between them that direhard fans can argue about it endlessly.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-23 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who loves pokemon... yeah kinda.
As far as the games are concerned the stories are incredibly simple and kiddie. There is a difference between "for kids" and ultra sanitized for toddlers. Like Harry Potter is for kids but the stories had more substance and character compared to whatever pokemon stories are going on in the games/anime/movie.

Not to mention a lot of new pokemon are more misses rather than hits. Sometimes there is a cool new one but some of them are just ridiculously lazy.

Annual release and the shift towards the mobile market hasn't helped things. You'd think they'd put more resources towards the core series since it's the pillar of the franchise.

While that's a fair cop, I also think the perceived sudden lack of interest in the latter is that suddenly, the latter isn't the only. They've moved into a mobile market, and other non-core games, given that those technologies markets are now a thing! I think the franchise still has plenty of heart, and that maybe some of those components will fall out of fashion in future, waxing and waning as innovation does, etc.

I kind of agree. If others enjoy them, cool! But I have no interest in buying Sword and Shield just now.

I can play an emulator of gens 1 - 3 and be cool

+1

Same. I was fine with the decisions for Pokémon Go and other spin-off games, but it feels like the core series is losing what MADE it the core series. =\

I'm not thrilled about some Pokemon not being playable (what about my shinies!) but I'll still probably buy the game. And with over a thousand Pokemon I kind of understand why it was an issue. I'll wait and see what people say about it before I spend my money on it though, which is not what I usually say.

Yeah it kinda sucks that Sword and Shield is for switch and not DS like usual. I actually got a lot of mileage out of my DS for years, but now everything is going to switch.

“not DS like usual”
Like usual, how?

Red/Blue was for Gameboy.
Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal for Gameboy Colour.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald for Gameboy Advance. (As well as Fire Red/Leaf Green)
Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and Black/White and Black 2/White 2 for DS. (Also Heart Gold/Soul Silver)
X/Y and Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon for 3DS. (Also Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)
And now Sword/Shield for Switch. (Also Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee)

They have always upgraded to the newest/best hand held console Nintendo has available, so it's not at all unusual or surprising that they're doing it now. In fact, it'd be a weird decision if they stuck to 3DS now that everything else is going to Switch.
