What's the most you'll spend on a book?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a textbook or like work-related book for a specific field, I know those can be expensive and you don't always have a choice about whether to buy them or not.

I mean just a random fiction book, especially if it's an author you're not familiar with and you're going entirely off of online reviews. How much is too much to spend in your opinion?

Ehhhhh. 8 bucks for a new paperback, 20 or 25 for a new hardcover? I guess? IDK.

(actually, I pretty much wouldn't ever buy a book by an author that I'm not familiar with, not because of the price, but because owning physical books, storing them, moving them when I need to move, etc, is such a pain in the ass. So I mostly only buy books if I actively know that I want to have a copy for the long term)

If it's an author I don't know and with only online reviews of strangers, I wouldn't spend anything at all. I've been disappointed too many times to bother with a totally random fiction book.

If it's recced to me by a friend or a source whose taste I'm familiar with and like, then no limit.

15 bucks for paperback and 30 for hardback, I guess. I read comics/manga mostly (and usually read them before buying) so that might skew things.

Given what you've said, $0.

I borrow from the library. If it's a book I a) love or b) think I'll re-read, then I'll buy it used or on sale.

Authors I truly love? I'll pay full price.

Less than $10. If there's only hardcover available, I'll skip it and get it from the library if I remember it.

I just spent $129 AU on the complete illustrated Earthsea in one volume. You get a lot of book for your money - five novels, one novel-length collection of short stories, various extra short stories, a short history (including the "oops, forgot to write women into the history" retcon) and of course a map.

Also it would be an excellent door-stop, step-stool, etc.

SA oh, that isn't a random author though. I love many of her works.

About $25 ish. I might drop more on a collectible edition, but it's been years since I've done that. Most stuff I can find for a lot cheaper though.

I don't buy paper books anymore except for the occasional manga. If it's an author I don't know I generally won't buy a Kindle book unless it's on sale for less than $10. But I'll pay more than that for an author I know and like. For manga I'll spend up to $20 I guess? Most manga seem to be less than that. But I don't buy books very often anymore at all due to budget concerns. Unless something looks amazing or isn't in the library at all I usually skip it.

$12 in an offline shop because 'ooh it's in my hands gotta buy' and 9 in an online shop. The new authors I either buy the books (mostly some non fiction that I crave) or just pirate.

If it's someone I'm not familiar with and has not been recced to me by someone who knows my tastes? Probably deeply discounted paperback (4-5$).

If it's an author I love, full price and then some lol. I am a total Jane Austenite and I've spent upwards of $100+ for second/third printings (since original first printings are TOTALLY out of my financial realm).

I also just spent $90 on the signed/illustrated LE Good Omens even though I have four other copies. >__>;;

I love Jane Austen! I've managed to avoid the temptation of collecting old editions. I did go through a phase where I wanted to read other 18th century female authors and that got relatively expensive because those books cost a lot just to buy a regular recent copy, unlike Austen novels.

Oh god, it's such an expensive addiction lol. I'll occasionally pick up cheap antique books from antique shops/shops that don't always realize the gems they have, but most of the time I limit the temptation but not going in!

Maaaaaaybe $20? If the blurb looks really good and the first few pages catch me? Less than that and it's probably just bargain bin junk that's gonna sit on my shelf until I do a clear-out, more than that and I won't want to gamble.

This is only tangentially related but when I was in high school (about 16 years ago? ish?), I went to the bookstore with my family and found the cheapest book I had ever seen. It was $2 and claimed to be the FIRST of a HUGE SERIES on the cover. It was A Game of Thrones lol.

I bought it.

I tried reading it but I found the prologue so boring that I gave up and I have no idea what happened to it. Years later, I pirated the series and read it all and had no problem engaging in it so IDK what was up with junior year me.

where are you from that you don't have libraries?

Re: What's the most you'll spend on a book?

DA

I'd probably pirate a book for the convenience, not for the cost.

It's not like everybody has a library that's in easy walking distance or a car to hop into to get there.

I love libraries but they are a PITA sometimes to actually use.

I didn't have a car until last month so I was homebound unless someone came to get me and could fit my wheelchair in their car. So I pirated. (I'd say 'so sue me' but I really wish you don't).

I wouldn’t buy a book by an author I didn’t know based entirely on offline reviews. I might buy it if the inside/back cover blurb looked interesting and I liked the first few pages. For a new hardback I might spend $25-$30, vs $7-$10 for a new paperback. I’m more likely to pay full price for things by authors I love, and/or special edition illustrated editions or similar.

I'm very lucky in that regard, I live in a part of the world with lots of great second hand/discount bookstores (the SF bay area)

If I had a lot of money I would spend quite a lot on rare volumes.

Re: What's the most you'll spend on a book?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-23 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Years ago, I spent maybe $50 (probably about $80 in today's money) to get a book that was some kind of small press small-batch special thing because it was the next book in a series I loved and that was the only edition available.

These days, I rarely buy books and just use the library. I also like used book stores where everything is no more than a few bucks. If I buy a book new, I won't spend more than $25.

Re: What's the most you'll spend on a book?

For an author I'm unfamiliar with? Anything more than $1US. That way if I don't care for it at all, I have no desire to keep it simply because I paid full price. I load up at dollar stores and library book sales.

Now if it's an author I know, and especially if it's incredibly rare? Maybe.. $500US? Though the most I've ever paid is a little over $100US for a copy of a long out-of-print book from another country.
