What books, movies, shows, etc. helped make you who you are today? Are you better or worse for it?

Star Wars. Harry Potter. Anne of Green Gables. Star Trek. Tolkien. I don't honestly know what made me better and what made me worse. Well, I can say that I think Leia and Hermione both made me better in terms of inspiring my passion for justice and helping people. And Anne inspired me to be me and to keep reading and asking questions. But other than that, I don't know.

I thought very hard in order to come up with a fun answer but it came out sad: nothing.

Aside from being able to pwn most average people in Lord of the Rings book trivia, nothing I read or watched as a child has had any influence on who I am today. All those female-centric horse books? Silver Fang? Watership Down? He-man and She-ra? Short Circuit and Ghostbusters? None of them lent anything to my present makeup. I have probably collectively forgotten more about these properties than any influence they might have had.

A few years ago, I bought the M*A*S*H DVD collection and power watched all the episodes in a summer. There were so many things I had forgotten about it, but things that had unconsciously stayed with me. This series, plus Kurt Vonnegut novels, turned me against any idea of war; there were things I often say that I thought were family 'sayings', but came from the script (e.g. a nurse tells Hawkeye that he looks terrible, he answers, "I feel terrible, too. It's a matched set." I have repeated that for years!); there were so many episodes that preached against racism and nationalism, that I realized my 'all white' community wasn't the norm - even when I watched the show as a kid; and, maybe most importantly, I fell in love with the character of Hawkeye and added his positive qualities to my aspirations. So, yeah, I'm much better for having watched it throughout my entire life.

What popular personality do you hate that everyone else seems to love? It can be anyone. Singer. Actor. Writer. Someone Who's Famous for Being Famous. Doesn't matter.

I'll start: Felicia Day.

People fucking *love* her, but she just straight-up rubs me the wrong way. She's like the personification of a MPD. I mean, objectively, there's nothing to hate about her. She's harmless. And yet...I straight up can't stand to watch her in anything.

Neil Patrick Harris. Everyone loves him because of HIMYM and because he's a married gay man with kids so he's an ~inspiration~ for all of us or something. But the Amy Winehouse cake was so distasteful for me that I can't let it go.

Oprah. While I am impressed with the way that she worked hard to get to the empire that she built, I cannot take her Hallmark philosophy that is meant to inspire her fans. But two things in particular: 1) her book club (her judgement and casting out of the Million Little Pieces author and acting like she discovered Elie Weisel's Night) and 2) footage on her show when she 'discovered' Target and spent way too much time shrieking about how 'cheap' and 'fabulous' it all was. I live in a part of the midwest where many people can't afford to shop at Target, and since she was very poor once, she might want to remember that.

There's a lot of extremely popular Youtubers that I've never heard of and when I do hear of them, they usually strike me as boring. I'm pulling a Youtube version of "I'm cooler than you because I only follow obscure indie bands" because I don't care if someone has a lot of subscribers, but I stick to channels that specifically relate to my interests and are entertaining and I have no patience for the gimmicky "I ate ice cream for a whole week!" kinds of posts people who make an entire career out of Youtube seem to do.

I liked her until the whole gamergate thing hit. Then she talked about how much gamers scared her and... I just can’t anymore.
