Same they are fun and goofy and that song is such a bop

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually really like Cowboys and Aliens!

I like the genre, but uhhhhh... it's not hard for me to see why none of those movies has taken off, put it that way.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck everyone you know in RL, you like what you like. Don't ever let anyone shame you for your taste in movies. I've only watched one of those films, but it was fun and enjoyable.

Westerns and sci-fi westerns are great, I just wish there more examples of the latter. I thought Cowboys & Aliens was pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 for wanting more sci-fi westerns. They can be awful, but when they work, they're some of my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of all those movies I've only seen The Magnificent Seven, but I really enjoyed it, OP. I wish Hollywood would make more fun westerns.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've seen every movie listed except Django Unchained, is it good? I loved all the others.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Django Unchained is very Tarantino. If you like his other movies and like Westerns then you'll probably like DU.

It is set in the antebellum South, though, so be aware that there is a lot of disgusting racism on display.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Cowboys and Aliens is a really good scifi flick tbh, and Wild Wild West is just fun

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird westerns are fun, though I really wanted to like Wild Wild West more than I did.

Do you watch older westerns too? The classic spaghetti westerns like the Dollars Trilogy or even old John Wayne work?

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not really? I mean, I've watched a lot of the classics, and I enjoyed them as a kid, but I don't really like them as much as the modern westerns. They have less crazy OTT fun, and tbh, the old stuff is very white and male. Modern westerns are less so, which is nice.

I think people would definitely judge my taste less if I could say I liked "Shane" more than "Buffalo Boys," but alas. lol

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew up watching TV westerns, so I'm definitely on board for more! Movie and tv both. Sci-fi and weird westerns are also amazing.

(Although, when I say I grew up with TV westerns, I do also mean the original Wild Wild West, so ... it's a bit hard to take the movie version of that one well. But I enjoyed the others of these that I've seen, and even that one isn't terrible, I guess. I just really, really miss TV Loveless and Artemus)

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, you may want to check out Sukiyaki Western Django. It's a movie made by the Japanese, but everyone speaks in English and the movie is a mashup of Japanese samurai movies and Westerns. It's surreal in a way that makes it awesome, and it sounds like it might be up your alley.

A+ taste! I also unironically love westerns and related genres. And The Good, The Bad, The Weird will always be one of my favourite movies.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen "Django" (hate Tarantino) & I've never heard of ". . . Weird", but I'll have to watch it because I love the others in this secret. I, too, love sci-fi/weird westerns & think we need way more of them.

you have a great taste in movies & i agree on will smith rapping
i only ever watch movies that are happy or cheesy or animated because i'm a depressed fuck and they make me feel good. every time i mention it i get people reacting weird :/ not like telling me i have bad taste, but it's clear ppl don't understand that things being just FUN is enough sometimes

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If you like those, you might like Bunraku: similiar idea thematically (if there is a consistent theme at play here other than "I thought it would be cool", which is perfectly valid), but more of a stylistic samurai film rather than a western.

But generally, every time a secret like this comes up I find I keep trying to describe the difference between films being good and being enjoyable, and how they're entirely different criteria, so I've made this shitty but (I hope) illustrative diagram in MS Paint:

I like Django Unchained a lot.

I loved the Magnificent 7 remake - full disclosure, I've never seen the original, but I HAVE seen Seven Samurai.

As someone who is a carer to people who watch the originals day in day out...this genre died for a reason. And it wasn't the terrible gunshot sound effects.

Whitewashing and racism might have been a thing tho.,
