[Stranger Things]

I feel odd whenever this comes up because I SHOULD relate to Barb given my history, especially my life at school. But I just...didn't. I watched the first season a couple of weeks behind everyone else and remember finding it odd she was such a thing considering how little she was in it. And yeah I know people latch onto minor characters with barely any screen time all the time, I'm just saying I expected more. Maybe I also expected the uncool apparently relatable friend wouldn't get eaten by the monster after five minutes as well. Idk.

Agree though that the slogan was basically a fandom meme and still is.

Yeah I don't even like Barb that much but I get so defensive of people crapping on her as a character, it's weird

I think Barb as a character was fine and fulfilled her narrative purpose. I don't think she was in any way like...bad or "not perfect" or whatever.

I just think that the people who relate so strongly to a clear side character, to the point where every possible slight against her is a slight against them, up to and including the narrative not entirely stopping for her sake, need to take a step back from their own personal feelings about it.

A lot of the Barb stans did not acknowledge her flaws though, while being quick to hate on Steve or even Nancy.

And? I’m just saying “it’s okay for a character to be flawed” is not where a lot of those people were coming from, if I’m wrong for not liking that, lol.

No one's mad. It was a little disappointing that a character that was hyped up so much turned out to be such a whole lot of nothing, but the rest of the show was good enough to make up for it.

I didn't love or hate her tbh, but I did feel sorry for her getting mulched by upside-down monster, that's a shitty way to go. But otherwise we never got enough of her as a character for me to really form much of an opinion.

It's funny how much the internet wants to relate to this reasonably attractive, upper-middle-class white girl who hangs out with the popular kids and is kind of mean. Sucks she got eaten by a monster, I guess.

It's not exactly difficult to be snarky about Barb fandom but this is just not what's going on there

I always got the impression the fandom was up in arms about how little Barb was missed/mentioned and they assumed it was because she wasn't attractive. I thought they related to her because she was average looking and bookish.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That, and also because she's distinctly not comfortable with the popular kids, other than Nancy.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
She looks like a generic-brand Molly Ringwald in fashionable (for the time)clothing and the only sign that she's bookish is that she's got those oversized plastic frame glasses that every near-sighted person wore in the mid-80s. It's not like she ought to be wandering around with a bag over her head. She's unkind in almost every scene she's in. I'd have guessed that's why no one missed her versus her not being hot enough.

I've never understood the strong opinions towards Barb, good or bad. She was in, what, two episodes?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about this the other day actually. I loved the fandom response to Barb's 'death'. It reminded me of the good ol' days of fandom where people could have unrealistic/steadfast opinions without needing an encyclopedia to defend them. Never really knew there was hate against it, tbh.
I knew a few people who were serious about the Barb's secretly alive somewhere, but it was always in good fun where I saw it.

What's a cinnamon roll character?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
From Urban Dictionary:

Cinnamon Roll
A character that is very kind and sweet but faces more hardship and suffering than they truly deserve. Comes from the usage of an article headline from 'The Onion' titled 'Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure.' to describe a person or character that is very good but faces a lot of pain in their life.

Well, I guess that is ME too.
