Is there a reason why you're not sharing the fic, OP? I get the "if you want to read something, write it yourself" sentiment, even if I don't subscribe to it, but I've actually never really understood writing fic just for yourself (without publishing it). For me, fic is (like all fanworks, tbh) created to be shared and consumed by others. But I hate reading my own stuff, so that's probably part of why writing for myself is such an alien idea to me

Not OP, but I often write just for myself. That way I can have fun imagining/writing bits and pieces that scratch my itch, but I don't have to worry about polishing it up into a complete, cohesive, readable end product.

I think when I have that itch I just daydream about these bits or scenes. Sometimes I even narrate these daydreams in my head as if I was reading a story but as soon as I try to write them down the words just vanish, so I don't even try.

I can't speak for the OP but...

My unpublished work I might decide to publish one day but if I don't either I didn't finish it or I don't feel it's up to the standard I set myself. I still enjoy re-reading what I have from time to time and maybe that might occasionally inspire me to finish and publish.

not the op of this secret, but the op of the original post:

it's because i don't have to worry about it being fully polished, or even completely finished. i can just write something short and fun that doesn't need to be 100% cohesive, but that i can enjoy on my own time.

it probably helps that i don't hate my writing, i don't think i'm gods gift or anything, but i write well-enough for my own enjoyment.

That does sound nice! I do like rereading the incomplete fics gathering dust on my hard drive every now and then. It's fun to remember the story points that I had planned. I get incredibly embarrassed reading my own writing, though, so this is something that I do only very rarely.
