I have a few unpublished fics saved to my computer for similar reasons. I wanted to write it but never felt like I wanted to share it. There are fics I have shared but for me writing anything, including fanfic, is more for the practice and the love of it so I'm not always in the mood to put it on an archive.

I'm glad you were able to find something useful in the "write it yourself" advice even though yes sometimes it does come across...not particularly well. I do get it because I'm fully on board with encouraging people to try to write something they want to see but I also recognise not everyone has the confidence or the time etc.

Anyway, hope you continue to enjoy your fic writing!

Is there a reason why you're not sharing the fic, OP? I get the "if you want to read something, write it yourself" sentiment, even if I don't subscribe to it, but I've actually never really understood writing fic just for yourself (without publishing it). For me, fic is (like all fanworks, tbh) created to be shared and consumed by others. But I hate reading my own stuff, so that's probably part of why writing for myself is such an alien idea to me

Not OP, but I often write just for myself. That way I can have fun imagining/writing bits and pieces that scratch my itch, but I don't have to worry about polishing it up into a complete, cohesive, readable end product.

I think when I have that itch I just daydream about these bits or scenes. Sometimes I even narrate these daydreams in my head as if I was reading a story but as soon as I try to write them down the words just vanish, so I don't even try.

I can't speak for the OP but...

My unpublished work I might decide to publish one day but if I don't either I didn't finish it or I don't feel it's up to the standard I set myself. I still enjoy re-reading what I have from time to time and maybe that might occasionally inspire me to finish and publish.

not the op of this secret, but the op of the original post:

it's because i don't have to worry about it being fully polished, or even completely finished. i can just write something short and fun that doesn't need to be 100% cohesive, but that i can enjoy on my own time.

it probably helps that i don't hate my writing, i don't think i'm gods gift or anything, but i write well-enough for my own enjoyment.

That does sound nice! I do like rereading the incomplete fics gathering dust on my hard drive every now and then. It's fun to remember the story points that I had planned. I get incredibly embarrassed reading my own writing, though, so this is something that I do only very rarely.

I wish I were able to do the same. But nooo, my fantasies stay stuck in my head and I can't word them out.

I'd write the fic if I ever could come up with stories and not just scenarios.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I started out writing scenarios. Took a while to progress to stories but I got there. Like anything else, making up stories takes practice. Writing scenarios might be like practising scales in music, idk.

I've spent some eighteen years of my life writing scenarios, haha. Maybe conscious practice might be in order, because I DO want to share my ideas.

Sometimes people are happy with just scenarios!

I decided this about 10 years ago. Best creative decision I ever made! I never have plans to write professionally so there's no pressure to hone the craft for an audience. I've written over 500,000 words of drawerfic since then and they're all ridiculous Mary-Sue fantasies that have no artistic merit apart from making me happy. I've never had so much fun in fandom as since I made that decision!
