(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)I get that for the books and the previous installments but not for the 2019 series, tbh. It's set in the present, so the historical aspect of the original seems largely irrelevant to me and most of the cast consists of completely new characters. Though to be fair, the parts that I found most boring were the scenes that dealt with things that happened in previous installments.
To be clear, I had no previous knowledge of Tales of the City before watching the 2019 series and am unlikely to get into any of the previous canon. There might be a cultural aspect to this too, though. I'm not from the US and hadn't heard about Tales of the City before the Netflix series. From what I gather the original books and previous TV installments where very influential and well-known. Maybe that makes it more impenetrable for US/English-speaking audiences, like you said.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)Well, it is a continuation, so you were completely right about that. I just checked Wikipedia and, keeping in mind that I don't know anything about the old canon other than what is explained in the new series, 5 of the 9 main characters are from the old canon, but they all have plotlines involving the new characters. The recurring cast seems almost entirely original to the new series.
I did feel that it was largely new material (or at least integrated in such a way that no previous knowledge was necessary). To be fair, the first episode (like the trailers) puts a lot of focus on Mary Ann and her return to Barbary Lane, which has probably a big emotional impact when you're a fan of the original canon but left me sort of meh. Personally, the other characters and their relationships were interesting enough that I kept watching and the show does move on from that.
