Watching Another Life. There's a non binary character, cool. But their pronouns are ze/hir which makes me want to scream. Just use they/them like a normal person!

I feel like a fuddy-duddy whenever I think stuff like that. Like, I understand & respect your pronouns, but "they/them" is just so much easier to say.

That show's a bloody dumpster fire anyway.

Hot cast, though

Well, that sucks to hear. The premise is right up my alley, so I was planning to watch it when I had the time.

Is "hir" pronounced differently enough from "her" that people notice?

"Ze put hir bag over there" sounds more like somebody trying to badly fake a bad German accent while speaking about a woman. Isn't "they" more distinctly nb?

That's how I "hear" it in my head, too... as a bad German accent.

I know that the consensus among NB people (like over 90%) is "they" but having read queer SFF with alternate pronoun sets, I think they're a better option grammatically.

Ze/hir is a normal NB pronoun. This was becoming well-known years ago before gatekeepers started screaming about "cringey" neopronouns. I hope the show can help more people get used to it again!

I think you're putting the cart before the horse there. I think the reason that ze and hir haven't succeeded is because many people find them weird and offputting - I don't think that "gatekeepers" needed to brainwash people into reacting that way.

That doesn't mean that they don't have their own merits, but it is the drawback.

Often those pronouns have histories of use longer than the gatekeepers.

YES. I feel the same way . As a group already struggling with acceptance, making up stupid pronouns isn't going to help. It looks particularly dumb in text.

Ah, good old respectability politics! :')
