Advice for a first-time Yuletider

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that Yuletide signups or nominations or something are coming up, and I've been debating signing up to participate this year since I think a fandom I want to nominate is close to crossing the ineligble line. However, I have no clue exactly where to go to nominate/sign up, where to link to my yuletide letter, what qualifies as a must have and what's "Optional Details are Optional", etc.

Any explanations, advice, links, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

yuletide_admin.dreamwidth.org - official DW page for announcements. They will tell you how to nominate and sign up (it's on Archive of Our Own), what is eligible etc. There's also a tumblr and a Discord server, but I can't remember the names just now.

yuletide.dreamwidth.org - unofficial DW page which is helpful with how to write a letter and where to link it. You technically don't even have to have a letter. I put mine on DW but you can put it anywhere you like.

There aren't really "must haves" except that the fic has to be about the characters requested, but letters will usually give likes/dislikes and possibilities to help inspire the writer. (Those are the "optional details.") You are allowed to have "Do Not Wants" that the writer is not allowed to put in the fic. You may want to put those in the actual sign-up as technically the writer doesn't have to read your letter. That's probably not going to happen, but I do it every year just in case.

I've done this every year for something like ten years and it's usually pretty fun. However do keep in mind that you may not get fic or be assigned to write fic for the particular fandom you want to nominate, so try to think of other small fandoms you might like. (Sorry if that sounds patronizing...)

I hope this helps! Those two communities should tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Nominations aren't until October 2 - October 10 so you have a while.

Putting your Do Not Wants in your sign-up isn't just a may-want, it's a must if you want them enforced. If you just put them in your letter, common consensus is your writer's a dick if they include them, but Optional Details Are Optional.

True, good point.

Thanks! I'll poke around those sites and see if I can figure out the rest.

Nah, it's good information to know. Although in this case, I WAS aware of that and have already prepped the first drafts my Yuletide letter with three fandoms, including the one I mentioned in the thread starter. And depending on what gets nominated, I may be able to ask for/offer more.

So the noms don't start until October? Huh, I thought it was in August/September. Ah well, more time to try to figure this stuff out.

Thanks again!
