What fun, amusing, interesting, or engrossing internet finds have you find recently that you want to share?

Found this today. https://www.reddit.com/r/CatsNamedToothless/ Basically it is black cat pictures. Cats who should be named Toothless because they look like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. Adorable. I've spent the past hour and a half on there.

Wholesome cheese

Every non-canon-based ship-fic needs some pretext for the characters to meet.

What are your favorite silly situations? Or some memorable silly ones from fics you've read?

Doesn't matter if they're completely corny or stupid or unbelievable

One character is driving a muscle car to draw the cops' attention away from a shipment of booze he's trying to smuggle across state lines. The other character is a runaway bride who hitches a ride with him.

I like "stuck in an elevator" type situations. Not sure I've read any in an actual elevator but I read one "trapped in a building but safe there" and it amused me greatly.

- one character is a contestant on a dating show; the other character is a producer on the show

- one character is a celebrity with a late-night talk show that the other character watches every night. they match up on Tinder. the second character thinks they're being catfished but decides to roll with it anyway

There was a premise going around a while back for a thief pitying their intended victim - 'I was going to rob you, but damn, your place is pathetic so let me get you some stuff instead'.

In Daredevil crossover fic, there is a lot of people meeting after ending up in dumpsters. It's a thing. (It is actual show canon that Daredevil has been fished out a dumpster to be patched up.)

Law enforcement officer and arrested suspect who is actually innocent and has been framed. Followed by a good solid fic where they have to prove they've been framed and solve the crime. Always a favourite for me.

Writing Help - Conflict

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, I need help. I can dialogue. I can exposit. I can scene build. THEN EVERYTHING GETS FUCKING STUCK BECAUSE THERE'S NO CONFLICT TO MOVE THE STORY FORWARD.

Fellow writers (be it fanfic or origfic) please share me your conflict-creation secrets?

Also, 'kill someone' will not work in this particular story, but might in others, but I'm not a fan of willy nilly killing to move things along.

Re: Writing Help - Conflict

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know if this will help but I was always taught that there were basically three main types of conflict:

* man vs. man
* man vs. his environment
* man vs. himself

If you know your characters and their personalities inside and out (and I feel like a lot of authors fail at this) then you have some idea of what sort of situation would serve as a catalyst for conflict. Then you have to figure out a credible way to create that situation.

There'a also your overall plot to consider. I assume you have one in mind... and you can't have a decent plot without conflict, so how is the character involved?

Thinking further ahead helps.

Where do you want the story to go? What should be the end result of the conflict?

Then, what conflict would get you there?

I've been listening to the Writing Excuses podcast, and someone recently made the following statement: Four main things drive a story: environment, character, disruptions to the status quo, and questions.
(From ep. 12.37, Subplots)

Re: Writing Help - Conflict

I stared at this question for a while before deciding that I either don't write conflict in most of my fic or have written conflict without knowing it. I mean, I guess it depends on what type of story you're writing. If you've got a plot, yeah, you need some conflict. But a lot of fanfic isn't about plot, per se? It can be humorous (where the punchline is the point), or between the scenes, or just exploring something about the characters. Because fanfic itself sort of exists outside traditional story telling.

That said, if you're writing original fic, yeah, you need conflict, and I'm not helping.

Big - natural disaster; unnatural disaster; serious illness or injury; serious mental health issues

Not as big - insecurity; miscommunication; argument; relationship milestone; career choices; family issues

Re: Writing Help - Conflict

My fics always seem to be 100% conflict lol.

The advice above is all solid. I would start by asking yourself where you want the story to go.

The only extra advice I can offer is that conflict should seem organic to the story, otherwise it's jarring.

Advice for a first-time Yuletider

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that Yuletide signups or nominations or something are coming up, and I've been debating signing up to participate this year since I think a fandom I want to nominate is close to crossing the ineligble line. However, I have no clue exactly where to go to nominate/sign up, where to link to my yuletide letter, what qualifies as a must have and what's "Optional Details are Optional", etc.

Any explanations, advice, links, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

yuletide_admin.dreamwidth.org - official DW page for announcements. They will tell you how to nominate and sign up (it's on Archive of Our Own), what is eligible etc. There's also a tumblr and a Discord server, but I can't remember the names just now.

yuletide.dreamwidth.org - unofficial DW page which is helpful with how to write a letter and where to link it. You technically don't even have to have a letter. I put mine on DW but you can put it anywhere you like.

There aren't really "must haves" except that the fic has to be about the characters requested, but letters will usually give likes/dislikes and possibilities to help inspire the writer. (Those are the "optional details.") You are allowed to have "Do Not Wants" that the writer is not allowed to put in the fic. You may want to put those in the actual sign-up as technically the writer doesn't have to read your letter. That's probably not going to happen, but I do it every year just in case.

I've done this every year for something like ten years and it's usually pretty fun. However do keep in mind that you may not get fic or be assigned to write fic for the particular fandom you want to nominate, so try to think of other small fandoms you might like. (Sorry if that sounds patronizing...)

I hope this helps! Those two communities should tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Nominations aren't until October 2 - October 10 so you have a while.

Inspired by 5. There have been some real doozies... Loki had some terrible wigs in the MCU. The classic is Antonio Banderas in Interview with the Vampire. What do you think?

Did you crush on older people when you were young? How about now at your current age? How many years is too many for you? Are you against age gaps in general, except for [insert specific person]?

Or in general, leave your .02 about age gaps here.

Venting thread

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-08-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm so angry and frustrated....

The wife of a dear friend (a paralyzed Vietnam Vet, who is so ill and weak he's been bed-bound for eight months), fell and fractured bones in her ankle and foot. TWO WEEKS AGO. The doctors are jerking her around. First, no cast until they got 275 dollars. I begged mutual friends, and we raised 450 for them.

THEN - they realized they had missed some fractures, and she needed surgery. They said she had to pay 3,500 dollars before they would do it. Now they've 'come down' to 900 dollars. My friends have about 200 left, and her Medicaid won't kick in for 9 more months (she's a nurse of 30 years on disability).

They are broke, he's not mobile, she *barely* is, their worthless grandson 'gets sick' if asked to take out garbage or whatever, and has lost his license so SHE is driving him to work. Their worthless daughter (lives 7 miles away) won't do anything without lengthy hemming and hawing and asks for gas money all the time.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. Why can't i just win a damn lottery and help all my friends?
