Venting thread

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-08-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm so angry and frustrated....

The wife of a dear friend (a paralyzed Vietnam Vet, who is so ill and weak he's been bed-bound for eight months), fell and fractured bones in her ankle and foot. TWO WEEKS AGO. The doctors are jerking her around. First, no cast until they got 275 dollars. I begged mutual friends, and we raised 450 for them.

THEN - they realized they had missed some fractures, and she needed surgery. They said she had to pay 3,500 dollars before they would do it. Now they've 'come down' to 900 dollars. My friends have about 200 left, and her Medicaid won't kick in for 9 more months (she's a nurse of 30 years on disability).

They are broke, he's not mobile, she *barely* is, their worthless grandson 'gets sick' if asked to take out garbage or whatever, and has lost his license so SHE is driving him to work. Their worthless daughter (lives 7 miles away) won't do anything without lengthy hemming and hawing and asks for gas money all the time.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. Why can't i just win a damn lottery and help all my friends?

That's horrible. I'm sorry your friends have to deal with all that. The health care system in the US is beyond fucked up.

I take it the VA has been no help?

Re: Venting thread

They 'might' take him in (in Memphis, hours away) on 'respite' care. He's supposed to get 30 days a year, but they want him to go two weeks/two weeks to give the hospital people 'a rest'.

But they're painting the spinal ward, so they only have half the usual beds, and might not have room, even though on 'respite' care, you don't get any real medical care, it's just boarding, so he doesn't *have* to be in the spinal wing.

She's not a veteran, sadly, so no help for her at all.

Gads, that sucks. I would have thought they'd have decent veteran's insurance at least. :(

He's lucky to get half his supplies, and they've completely cut him off all pain meds (shocking, he needs pain meds) because the doctor, quote, '(is) not going to lose my job for you'. It's incredibly, incredibly fucked up.

I'm plotting to get him some CBD oil capsules or something. They don't stay in the system forever like THC does, so if they do a drug test (they're constantly testing all the vets because they're all 'on drugs' or 'selling all the drugs' or some such utter nonsense), but he only goes in to the VA spinal center once a year, as they won't take him for more than that (except for the respite and fingers crossed they don't fuck him over on that).

*smh* And Medicare/Medicaid is useless too, I'll bet?

This almost sounds like something that a local news station ought to know about...

Right?

That's a crap situation. You can't do much if they're still enabling their family members to leech off them unfortunately.

Sadly, they're the only people around who can help at all - otherwise, they're totally alone.

Would they let you start a GoFundMe on their behalf? If that's a no go, I'd suggest a Catholic hospital. Many of them have charity programs and/or can help navigate the Medicaid process to get her coverage to get taken care of.

(My mother was in a similar boat, re: treatment for cancer. The hospital was how we got her coverage.)

Re: Venting thread

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-08-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
They would, but the issue is - would anyone donate in time? She's in pain every day, it's worse every day. A GoFundMe is just so slow.

They don't have money for traveling (and my friend can't travel at this point, he's so weak), so going to a Catholic hospital is out of the question unless there's one very close by, which I have no clue about. But again - money for gas, and there's still the issue of daughter/grandson being less than reliable to care for a bed-bound paraplegic.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-01 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
GoFundMe can be withdrawn pretty much as soon as money is there, so it'd just be a question of getting the donations, which is hit or miss, but theirs sounds like the kind of campaign that'd get funded.

According to this, she's actually most likely eligible for some form of TRICARE: https://www.va.gov/health-care/family-caregiver-benefits/

The whole situation just sucks, I'm so sorry they're going through that.

You'd think it would be, but you never know.

I'll send the links on, thank you!
I'm so disgusted by how uncaring all the nurses and doctors have been.

Re: Venting thread

Ain't that the truth. :( But even if they can raise enough for cab fares or Uber once the insurance is in place, that's something and every bit helps.

No problem! And yeah, doctors/nurses should be trying to help people get the care they need, not scoffing at it.

Re: Venting thread

If you do start a gofundme, please share the link here if you feel comfortable doing so. I don't have much but I'd like to donate.

The US healthcare system is so immensely fucked up. I can't believe our stupid fucking government is trying to go the same way.

I will, if I do. Thank you!

I'm boggled that *anyone* would want to copy our 'system'. It's a fucking mess.

Re: Venting thread

(Anonymous) 2019-08-01 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Our current government is full of people whose goal is to privatise the NHS. One of them described it as having 'enormous profit potential' and 'the greatest privatisation potential in the Western world'.

That, right there, is the entire reason for it. So rich people can make a fuck ton of money out of our world class, free at point of access, universal healthcare system that is the greatest force for social equalisation in this crapped out country.

I had a health incident a few years ago that meant several months in hospital, surgery, investigations, etc, etc. Afterwards I calculated it would have cost me 500,000 dollars in the US. It cost me nothing. I walked in, I walked out. That was it. In my opinion the entire damn world should be copying the NHS. It's amazing. It's biggest problems are caused by underfunding and out-sourcing, and the source of that is all political because the rich bloody Tories want their rich mates to make money.

Fuck them.

And in digging a little more, the VA offers home-based care, as well. Like anything with the government, it requires somebody doing the legwork and all that crap. It's referenced here: https://www.va.gov/GERIATRICS/Guide/LongTermCare/Skilled_Home_Health_Care.asp

Thanks, i'll send the links on. The biggest problem is money to drive anywhere, and that my friend can't actually *drive* anywhere.

But maybe after she (hopefully) gets the surgery......

Re: Venting thread

I'm not sure about TRICARE or their hospitals, but sometimes there're programs that'll help with transport to/from medical care. Definitely a lot of things to try to unsnare, sadly, but hopefully those links help at least a tiny bit.
