This is not a secret; this is a wankbait PSA. Basically the same thing (although more coherent and less inflammatory) was recently posted on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants, where it garnered lots of replies and a link on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom.

Maybe if it were a new PSA, I wouldn't be bothered, but this is old news, and everyone on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets has had the message impressed on them already. If they haven't picked it up yet, another poorly-worded secret isn't going to do it.

Alternately, you're a troll trying to stir up whining about those stupid feminists (on both sides).

Or maybe I'm just annoyed because you used an anime screencap of Orihime. Anime Orihime is fugly, especially compared to manga Orihime, who is gorgeous.

I remember that rant. It was the one that I decided not to bother commenting on because everyone agreed with it, I didn't think it was so great, and I didn't want to deal with the fall-out from everyone on the planet whose favourite colour is pink. (Mine is green).

It must be my reading habits; I never encounter this problem.

I think the rant made a good point, and by and large I agree, but it also didn't strike me as anything particularly new, and I have some issues with some of the ways the writer has talked about feminism in the past, so I left it alone.

I still think that fandom needs to lay off female characters whose traits are too feminine for their taste--it's one thing not to like them personally, another to tear into them for being "weak" and "ew how girly." But I think that the conversation often turns from "let's defend the feminine" to "let's shut down discussion of how deviating from the feminine is punished or excluded."

I have to say, I think it's the orihime that's annoying you.

The thing that bothered me about that rant is that everyone agreeing with it gave examples of characters who loved feminine stuff but "could still kick ass." Is it wrong to like females who like to do feminine things and can't kick ass? I mean, really, it's not like people like that don't exist in real life.

Alternatively, is it wrong to like non-feminine chicks who can't kick ass?

Why do female characters have to be able to do everything to be considered even somewhat acceptable?

Re: 161

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There are always rules to How To Be The Right Kind Of Woman. Even if you're a fictional woman.

That said, if a character is both girly and unable to kick ass, that is often a sign that she's a passive damsel-in-distress who serves primarily to further the male characters. But not always, and getting into the habit of dismissing all female characters who fit certain stereotypes as useless and sexist is a bad idea.

Re: 161

[identity profile] dots.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think it's strange how the double standard goes. It's perfectly all right for a man to be "typical" and fall into stereotypes, but the minute a woman does, whether it's "brash warrior" or "demure girl," she gets hated on. The former gets called a bitch, the latter gets called a damsel-in-distress.

Maybe I'm just biased because I like several "typically feminine" characters, I don't know.

Re: 161

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because most of the time there aren't any other female characters to compare this "typical" female character to. I mean, in a cast of characters there are usually a whole bunch of male characters with varying personalities. Each of them will be hated on by a part of fandom, but it's less noticeable since each of them will also be loved by a part of fandom. Female characters can't have this, because there are usually only one or two of them, and they're often the same type. Or they're two different types, which will polarize the fandom.

But if they can do everything, or even 80% of everything, then they're labeled Mary Sues. It's so hard to win, I'm not surprised that so many media productions don't even try.

Re: 161

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's really easy to win. All you have to do is include several main characters who are female and have varying personalities. That prevents them from having to represent all women.

Re: 161

(Anonymous) 2008-10-08 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's not going to stop fandom from latching on to one they like and ignoring the rest. And then saying people who don't like her HATE ALL WOMEN, oh noes.

Re: 161

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the last part of your statement will be avoided. The first part would put them in the same situation a a lot of the sillier fans of male characters.
