In SFF, prequels often expand or depend on concepts introduced early in the series. For example, I think Aslan works better as a literal deus ex machina (the deity that appears near the end of the story to say "good job" to the mortals) if you've read Wardrobe first.

SA: Publication order also has advantages and disadvantages in terms of quality. Good: You can bail out just as it's clear that the author is phoning it in for the advance check. Bad: Sometimes it takes an author a few books to really hit their stride.

Agreeepd, and IMHO reading Magician's Nephew first is just wrong.
