First, "gay-coded" is your interpretation. Other people might interpret the same characters as asexual, and unless there's some sort of confirmation in the canon/from the showrunners, either is equally valid IMO.

Second, yes, there needs to be more gay characters. But there are almost no asexual characters and I can understand asexual people wanting more representation.

(I can sympathize with the asexual side of this argument because I'm bi, and we don't get much representation either, while it feels like there are a ton of gay characters. Not as many as straight characters, obviously, but way more than bi or asexual ones.)
