If I remember correctly, part of the problem with Life, the Universe, and Everything was that it was originally written to be an episode of Doctor Who that ultimately didn't get made. The Hitchhiker's characters seemed so out of character in that book because they were actually Doctor Who characters with Hitchhiker's characters' names pasted on.

Nah, that was Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - it started life as the script for the unfinished (due to a cameraman strike, IIRC) 4th Doctor serial 'Shada'.

Nah, that was Shada. Life, the Universe, and Everything was supposed to have been Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen.
