Another fanwork secret:

I'm annoyed at artists who go "my art is all hard work, talent has nothing to do with it".
Yes, being good at art is a lot of work and practise. I know. But if you have a talent for it, it still comes easier to you than to others with not as much talent. I don't get what's so hard to understand about it. Yes, it's annoying if you get told "I wish I was as talented as you" as a way to dismiss your hard work. But talent is a factor that makes things easier. And not everyone is trying to use the talent thing as an excuse to ignore your work. Sometimes, its just a compliment with no evil intentions attached.

That sort of thing annoys me because of the assumption that anyone who isn't as good as them just hasn't worked as hard >:(

"Natural ability" is just one definition of the word "talent." "Talented" is also commonly used interchangeably with "good at" with it not mattering whether they're good at it because of natural ability or hard work. When I say someone is talented it means just that. Christ, it never even occurred to me that people were so picky about the dictionary definition of that word. Thank god I found out before I made the mistake of making a comment about talent on someone's art.

The number of artists I've seen who get OTT offended at someone even thinking the word "talent" in their general direction as if the mere mention of that word would instantly negate all the time and work they spent on improving their art is quite honestly ridiculous.
