I can sort of deal with characters dying due to stupid science like space viruses, video-game asteroid fields, and "oh, there's a moon there."

I sort of can't deal with characters dying because they're too busy doing stupid generation-gap "avocato toast" bullshit to follow orders or procedure.

It doesn't help that the crew is weirdly incompetent after 10 months of training to save the earth.

wah

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
want to clarify that I meant "wah" as in somebody confusedly asking a question, not "wah" like a person crying

hope this helps

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there actually a question or just a wah?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just trying to imagine what that could actually entail in the show. It seems very absurd.

I guess I'll find out if I ever get around to finishing it.

They set up the premise that 20-somethings and olds can't trust each other in first episode, which leads to a bunch of bad decisions where people end up dead.

Wow, really? I couldn't make it through the pilot, that's fucking stupid.
*sigh*

Why does so much sci-fi have to suck so much?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-09 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That would make sense if it was spun as "20-somethings who have verbally abused by their elders so much that they don't trust anyone older to not abuse them." The more paranoid you are the more you mess up. The more you mess up the more you get mocked.

I immediately lost interest when they killed Derek Hale/Yerxa. I mean the character was an arrogant ass based on what little we saw but I wanted more Tyler Hoechlin.

What, did someone die taking a hologram selfie in space or something?

Vulture had a great review that for me, at least, articulated more of this show’s problems well:

https://www.vulture.com/2019/07/another-life-netflix-review.html

I think they wanted the space crew be mostly young and all hot but also thought “well, this needs to be more realistic for today’s audiences”. But instead of writing it into the plot (“for some reason, only people under 30 can sense something game-changing about the aliens”) and/or having them make unseasoned but on-paper reasonable decisions - which might have potential - they just made everyone make terrible choices all around and then be shocked by the consequences.

I hate so much when characters die from incompetence, especially when they're supposed to be trained/know what they hell they're doing. So much.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-09 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I was going to watch this, thanks for the warning. Supposedly well-trained people being incompetent is my #1 hate. (Except in Torchwood, they were so incompetent that it turned around to hilarious.)

(Anonymous) 2019-08-09 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's really taken to ridiculous lengths in that show.
With Torchwood, at least with Gwen, she actually had an excuse being incompetent since she was basically never trained for any of the stuff she encountered.

The others not so much.

One of my "no" points was the doctor who stands over a convulsing patient and says, "I don't know" multiple times.

avocato...? rly?
