Re: Secrets You Can't Be Bothered to Make
(Anonymous) 2019-08-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)But I made the mistake of googling it before giving it a try, and I saw these articles talking about how Penn Badgley had to call out fans on twitter who were talking about how hot his character is. You know, giving them a "gentle reminder" that the character is, in fact a villain.
And now I can't watch the show because I can't look at Penn Badgley's face without wanting to punch the living daylights out of him.
It's one thing for a woman to call out other women on their problematic female fantasies. But when a man does it? In-fucking-tolerable.
Also, I really don't get this trend where actors feel like they have to loudly denounce the evil characters they play.
And I don't expect ANYYYYY sort of commiseration from anyone on this comm because I'm sure everyone here agrees with Penn Badgley that women are morally wrong for having such disturbing fantasies in the first place and probably directly contributing to rape or something by romanticizing a stalker/murderer/etc.
God, I'm tired. So fucking tired. Can we please go back to time when everyone understood how make-believe works.
So there's a rant.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-11 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)I do think there's a cultural tension there that you can't just entirely write off by saying IT'S JUST MAKE BELIEVE!!!!! as though we never learn or internalize anything from fiction.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)No it's not. I understand why it bothers you more when a man does it, but women shouldn't be doing it either. Have you seen all the harassment female fans of Snape and Kylo Ren get, telling them they're bad for feminism and are going to end up in an abusive relationship and deserve it? That's almost all coming from other women.
