Re: Secrets You Can't Be Bothered to Make

Someone IRL recently suggested the show You to me, and I was like OMG YES that is totally my kind of thing.

But I made the mistake of googling it before giving it a try, and I saw these articles talking about how Penn Badgley had to call out fans on twitter who were talking about how hot his character is. You know, giving them a "gentle reminder" that the character is, in fact a villain.

And now I can't watch the show because I can't look at Penn Badgley's face without wanting to punch the living daylights out of him.

It's one thing for a woman to call out other women on their problematic female fantasies. But when a man does it? In-fucking-tolerable.

Also, I really don't get this trend where actors feel like they have to loudly denounce the evil characters they play.

And I don't expect ANYYYYY sort of commiseration from anyone on this comm because I'm sure everyone here agrees with Penn Badgley that women are morally wrong for having such disturbing fantasies in the first place and probably directly contributing to rape or something by romanticizing a stalker/murderer/etc.

God, I'm tired. So fucking tired. Can we please go back to time when everyone understood how make-believe works.

So there's a rant.

I don't think it's morally wrong or that we should blame people for having the fantasies that we have.

I do think there's a cultural tension there that you can't just entirely write off by saying IT'S JUST MAKE BELIEVE!!!!! as though we never learn or internalize anything from fiction.

Haven't watched the show and I think he did mostly come off as douche in how he said it, but I think he was motivated a little by how often people were tweeting directly at him to treat them like his character. I think the fans who tweet their fantasies at the actors kind of cross the line themselves.

I don't know if you're being facetious or not, but this is exactly why (a) I won't make an actual secret about it and (b) I'm burying it in a Sunday thread that will go largely ignored. My opinions are so far outside the general overall ethos of this comm that they always get labeled as trolling.

I don't think there's really such a thing as a 'general ethos of this comm' and I'm pretty sure you're just noticing people who disagree with you more. And I say that because hand to God I do the same thing, I totally would have said most people on here agree with you despite the fact that we have the opposite views.

You're not missing anything. The show is terrible.

No it's not. I understand why it bothers you more when a man does it, but women shouldn't be doing it either. Have you seen all the harassment female fans of Snape and Kylo Ren get, telling them they're bad for feminism and are going to end up in an abusive relationship and deserve it? That's almost all coming from other women.

People shouldn't be assholes about it whether or not they're right.
