Give me a break. First off, Aang and Toph are not going to be 12 years old forever and I don't think extrapolating what they are going to be like older is impossible. Second, they are not normal 12 year olds, while they do have their immaturities, they are also more responsible and mature than any 12 year old that I have met, and they do not live in normal world.

I think this is also another problem with equating romance with sex, in that you can be in love with someone and not want or need to have sex with them.

I honestly want to know what the secret poster thinks of the people (not me personally) who ship Aang and Toph with each other, would that make Toph and Aang pedos with each other in this person's mind?

The thing I find most hilarious about this is that Toph and Aang are pretty much THE BIGGEST BADASSES on this show? Like, Aang is THE AVATAR and yet sometimes I wonder if Toph could beat him in a fight if sufficiently provoked? REMEMBER THE MELON LORD, KIDS.

Not that badassery = sexual maturity, of course, but the way that some people in fandom cast Katara and Zuko as Mommy and Daddy and Aang and Toph as the Loveable Kiddies is at once horrifying and hilarious.

I think Aang and Toph would kick Katara's and Zuko's butt in a fight if you want to get right down to it.

Does that make Sokka the crazy uncle in that scenario, because man Sokka always gets left out.

Also Aang and Toph seem to be the least governed by their emotions thus they would keep more order than Zuko and Katara which would be a household that I would not want to live next door to.

I suspect the house would be a pile of wet cinders by the end of the week.

(And while I know some people find that idea to be hot and awesome, I am sort of very much not one of those people. Heh.)

Yeah, what is it with Sokka getting shafted? He's a brilliant strategist and inventor! He's a non-bender that can hold his own against some of the most powerful warriors on the planet! He'd be a pretty hardcore crazy uncle, I feel. <3

i have never experienced this. if i am IN LOVE with someone, it is because (in addition to a kickass personality), i find them physically attractive and therefore want to have sex with them. if i love someone i DON'T want to have sex with, i call that "friendship." or family members. personally, in aang & katara's situation, i think the family thing is more fitting.

Just because you have never experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, I personally don't see sex as the biggest indicator of whether I am in love someone, it was also not something I wanted at the age of 14 when I wanted to date, granted it is not something I didn't want it just isn't my most pressing need. You can find someone physically attractive and not equate it with sex, just as you can want to have sex with someone but not be in love with them. Relationships are complicated. And I think you need to realize that not everyone is you.

personally, in aang & katara's situation, i think the family thing is more fitting.

And family can mean a lot of things, but I obviously view the relationship different from you, and my main contention was that people who like Aang/Katara are pedophiles or that Katara is a pedophile for liking Aang (when that is not the case). I think people who think that way draw on it because they think shipping is all about sex and the porn when it doesn't have to be.

i didn't want sex when i was 14, no, but i also wouldn't have said i was in love with someone - at least not in the "you're the one for me, let's spend the rest of our lives together" sense. i don't mind aang having a crush on katara, of course 12-year-olds get crushes... i just draw the line when they start sucking face.

I disagree, but different strokes for different folks.

I don't have a problem with them kissing as that is par for the course at their age and don't think there is any problem with their relationship as it stands in canon, which is about as much interest as it goes for me.

I also can't hold them against the 12 and 14 year olds of our world because true I didn't think I was in love with any at 14 years old, but I also wasn't in charge of ending a 100 year war or keeping peace at that age either.
