Seriously. What about all the animators? Do animation artists not count as artists unless they're drawing and animated THEIR OWN CHARACTERS? If that were the case, you'd never have ANY animated cartoons. It's just way too much work for one person. This is such an absurd arguement.

Absolutely agreed, it seems the OP was stuck on ludicrous speed or something.

Even discounting the people who Get Paid (gasp) to draw other people's fictional characters/creations, how does the OP think anyone develops their talent? Or do they just spring from the heads of their parents, paintbrush in hand and no additional practice needed?

Yeah. There's probably a valid arguement in there somewhere, but the phrasing is just terrible. I get annoyed, for instance, by people who get super popular off drawing Naruto (or whatever is popular, Harry Potter, Bleach, etc) fanart, while original artists who are far superior in talent get ignored because their stuff is unknown/original. It's annoying. It's unfair. It's especially annoying when the fanart is actually crappy and the original art is really obviously superior but goes completely ignored. I get that completely. I often lament that sort of thing as an artist myself.

But to say a fanartist is not a "real artist" is just bullshit. It's much better to say "I hate that fanart gets more popularity than original art" or something. I don't know. I doubt the OP intends to be wanky, and possibly that is how s/he really feels. It just comes off so closed minded, like s/he didn't really think things through when s/he made that secret.

I completely understand that viewpoint, and I know how aggravating it can be to have your hardest-work art ignored completely while some crap doodle of a popular character gets a zillion favorites or comments.

That doesn't make fanart any less valid than original art; and my big resentment in that there are people out there who think I'm lower than shit because I draw and write characters that I didn't originally create. I could point them to my original stuff, but they don't CARE about my original stuff, just the fact that I've committed the mortal sin of fan-creating.

Wow, I have no idea where I'm going with this. Ah well! Bitterness, let me show it...

Yup, yup. Drawing fanart does not make you less of an artist in any way. ESPECIALLY if you don't want to make a career of your art! Why SHOULD you draw original characters if that's not your goal? Sigh.
