"he was supposed to be a hero", that line rubs me the wrong way. Iron Man has always been about righting Tony's wrongs. That's the difference between him and Captain America: Cap is altruistic ("I don't like bullies"), Tony fucks up and then tries to fix it. This is something the MCU has been pretty consistent about.
I'm not saying he was right to refuse to help Cap & co., but he has to help because he's supposed to be a hero is the wrong argument here.
