Context?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
In the game Shadow of War, Shelob, who in the books is a giant spider, can for some random reason take a human form. Just so we can get a sexy woman in the game.

DA

Ahh... well I agree with OP then.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not know these games at all, but that is genuinely baffling to me. Of all beings in Middle Earth to want to make pretty, why would you pick the giant spider demon? The giant spider demon who is daughter of the even bigger giant spider demon who once almost ate Satan, as well as actually eating the predecessors to the sun and moon. I mean, you don't need to pretty that lineage up. That is awesome and terrifying all by its lonesome.

It sounds very Naginiesque.

1. Thank you OP, I appreciate you very much.

2. My bf told me about this and it spawned a 15 rant about how utterly nonsensical it was because aside form being the baby of a giant spider-demon Shelob is not actually in any way capable of casting magic. She's just a big fuckoff spider that eats people. Why they picked her of all creatures will never make sense to me, just make-up an evil elf-lady if you want sexy-evil female, that wouldn't be quite so out there(I'm not sure if evil-elves are about in the 3rd age, but the idea of that bothers me so much less than making the giant person-eating spider-monster a sexy-lady).

There is a First Age vampire-lady servant of Sauron named Thuringwethil. They could have just pretended she survived or had kids or something.

Ohooo, I didn't know Tolkien had vampires in his lore that's pretty interesting, and I'm guessing rare-ish as well? Also, that certainly is a name. xD

But there you go, an evil-lady in the lore they could have easily put in and would make more sense than Shelob.

Yup. She serves as Sauron's messenger. She does die in the first age, but they seem willing enough to mess with canon.

I’d managed to successfully forget about this. Now I’m gonna do my best to forget about it again.

I'd really like to just forget these games exist. Except some of the visuals of the first one are kind of like how I visualize things. They did a good job with Annatar. But everything else? So many unfortunate canon changes. I'm honestly not even sure if Shelob or how they messed with Celebrimbor's character annoys me more.

Thank you for not posting a picture of a giant spider.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Even as a spider Shelob wasn't sexy. I seem to remember lots of descriptions of pus and ooze so how they got this generic sexy travesty from that is beyond me.

*cackling*

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
As the above anon noted, that phrasing is... odd. As though Shelob would have an increased likelihood of a sexy appearance as a spider than as a woman. You probably didn't mean it that way (but if you did I'm not judging, YKINMK!) but it's pretty funny.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL yes you're right, that came out wrong! I do quite like spiders - they're an ancient and noble lineage going back hundreds of millions of years - but even the most committed natural history film maker would've found it impossible to enthuse about Shelob.

1. Thank you for not using a spider picture. That was very considerate of you and I, for one, appreciate it.

2. They did WHAT.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Shades of Nagini here... shudder...
Don't know the game but wtf?
Why can't the makers just let the female big ass scary humungous spider be just that? That's what makes her awesome (and terrifying!)

They did what?!?!?!?

Hard agree, OP, not OK.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or did they cast someone who's uncomfortably close to Liv Tyler (Arwen) for that model.
