I'd watch a whole movie if them, because I'm so so tired of sausage.

The problem with MCU is that there are so many characters that only one or two get the majority of the screen time at a given time, and the rest are just sort of... there. I hate to say it, but I feel like an all-female Avengers movie would be the same way.

The scene felt pretty try-hard but it's not like it ruined my day. The sentiment was appreciated and I'd like to see more of all of these characters.

Shouldn't Mantis not be there because there's going to be too much negative emotion on the battlefield? Or am I completely forgetting what her powers do?
(it took me a while to even notice they tucked Valkyrie in the backround there)

I think she has to be in actual physical contact for anything like that to happen? I dunno....i didn't seem like she could project/receive without touching, but who knows.

(I luff Mantis, but i just can't remember.)

Yeah, I searched it up, she has full control of her empathetic powers. She can do some other stuff too, and is apparently very good at martial arts. I love her too, and would have loved to see her kick more ass!

Yes! That would have been awesome.

I honestly think my only complaint about that scene is that... a scene such as that should be able to happen without someone going OMG HDU GIRL POWER/FANSERVICE/CATER TO WOMEN/ACT LIKE BOYS ARE WORTHLESS or whatever the objections were. Maybe it was a little fanservice-y, but ffs, it's just a brief scene. It really should just be a normal, common kind of scene, nothing out of the ordinary, without people assuming bad intent. Makes me wonder if we would have gotten as strong of a reaction had it been a team of guys.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It really should be a normal scene, but it's not, so it stood out.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
For it to be normal, MCU movies would have needed to have been doing woman-only pose-as-a-group shots more often before this. Hopefully this marks the first of many and it will start feeling normal.

I think a lot of the protest comes from a sexist angle, but... it wasn't a particularly empowering scene to me, either. I'm not opposed to fanservice moments, but not if that's all we're getting as opposed to better scenes, more lines, better writing, etc. for the female characters involved. The scene was easy, it wasn't earned. That's why it feels artificial to me.

I wonder how many of the MCU movies even pass the Bechdel test?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just under half of them and some of them just squeak in.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Pepper being thrown in was odd to me. Don't get me wrong, I've always thought she was awesome but not as a 'go kick ass on the battlefield' type woman but in her being a kickass business woman who can handle Tony.
It frustrates me that to the MCU 'strong woman' must always equal 'can kick ass on a battlefield'. I also love Mantis and think she's an awesome strong woman again not because she can necessarily kick ass directly but because of her empathetic nature.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that people definitely overreacted but it does seem a little silly that they felt the need to put that in there when we already know how badass and strong these characters are.

It is a little ridiculous when you think about it. Every woman on the battlefield just took a second out of whatever they were doing and gathered themselves to one spot.... for no reason really? To have Captain Marvels back? As if she needed any help... and if she did why only from girls?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
OT but UNF i LOVE carols hair. and carol.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-20 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't bother me but it was definitely a try-hard attempt at fanservice. Having all the female characters conveniently gather on the same spot of the battlefield and slowly take a couple steps forward without actually doing anything was... unnecessary.

Literally all of the strongest characters of the MCU are women so there was never a point I was like "we need the token girl power moment". Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch were kicking Thanos ass just fine without anyone's assistance.

Mantis is plenty powerful. If she could put Ego to sleep and briefly have some control over Thanos, she’s got some serious abilities. But needing to be in contact with people does make it a bit of an issue. On the plus side,Mantis has also always been a good martial artist. So she’s at least as useful as any of the non powered characters in straight combat.
